They call Green Bay, Wisconsin "Titletown, USA." This is the result of 9 NFL Championships and 3 Super Bowls. More accurately it is the result of the Vince Lombardi years. No matter how great the Curly Lambeau years were in Green Bay, it is Vincent Thomas Lombardi who is responsible for that moniker. That's what happens when you deliver 3 NFL Championships and the first 2 Super Bowls.

To be fair, Lambeau's 6 NFL Championships laid the ground work for the nickname to be bestowed, but it will always be Lombardi for whom the dynasty is remembered. Curly Lambeau of course is the namesake of Lambeau Field where the Packers play and where the Cowboys come to visit on Sunday. Lambeau's 6 titles spanned a 30 year period. Lombardi's 5 happened in a 9 year span. Hence why Lombardi is so revered.

Well, that and he took over a team that was 1-10-1 and turned it into a dynasty. Lombardi's first two years we rebuilding years. So in reality, his 5 titles spanned a 7 year period. If you ever want to understand why Lombardi is associated with winning, if the History doesn't impress you Google "Vince Lombardi quotes" and read for yourself. There's a reason why the Super Bowl Trophy bears the man's name. He was perhaps the first coach ever consumed and possessed by winning.

The Packers were established in 1921. They had been an independent team for 2 years under Curly Lambeau in 1919 and 1920 when they were invited to join the NFL. Their roots may even pre-date 1919 as they had successful semi-professional teams dating back to the late 1890's. Many believe this is why the Packers have such rabid followings. They have always been about football in that area of the country.

When Lambeau established the Packers in 1919 the name came from the Indian Packing Company where Lambeau worked. His company provided the money for their uniforms and the name Green Bay Packers was born. They are the oldest franchise in professional football with a continuous name. Lambeau sought more financial backing to keep the team above water and he found four other investors who collectively were called "The Hungry Five." Including Lambeau these investors would become the backbone of the Green Bay Football Corporation. The nickname "Hungry Five" was allegedly given to these men because they always had their hand out for donations to keep their team alive.

The Green Bay Football Corporation, a non profit entity when formed, survived the Great Depression and other hardships by having stock sales in the team. For this reason the Packers remain the only NFL team that does not have a sole owner, but rather is a publicly owned company with an appointed board of directors. When the original documents of the corporation were put into place, the bylaws included a provision that if the team were ever sold the money would go to the American Legion to build a proper memorial for war veterans.

The "Hungry Five" are inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. Curly Lambeau is the only one of the five who ever made any money from the corporation, his salary as coach. The team is now run by a Board of Directors (who were effectively created as they exist now in 1986) who oversee several community interests as well as team interests. The Chairman of the Board is Mark Murphy, the General Manager is Ted Thompson.

The Cowboys and Packers have had a glorious History against each other. It springs from the fact that Lombardi and Tom Landry were assistants with the New York Giants. Lombardi was the Offensive Coordinator and Landry was the Defensive Coordinator. Not many people know this, but Landry's Flex Defense was created specifically to stop Lombardi's rushing attack that featured Jim Taylor. Jim Taylor is the only RB to ever lead the NFL in rushing other than Jim Brown when Brown was playing. Eight of Brown's nine NFL seasons saw him lead the NFL in rushing, Jim Taylor led the only year he did not.

Landry never did stop Lombardi's Packers Offense (Lombardi was 0-2 against Landry and the Cowboys as Commanders Head Coach). The two coaching giants faced each other a total of five times while Lombardi was with the Packers, including twice in the Post Season. Lombardi's Packers won all five games. One of those games, and the last one where the two ever faced each other was the 1967 NFL Championship, dubbed "The Ice Bowl." This game is generally accepted as one of the greatest games in NFL History because the players performed under inhuman circumstances. Depending upon which report you believe, the wind chill factor made this game somewhere between -44 degrees and -48 degrees at game time.

The game ended on a controversial play. With the Packers knocking at the goal line on 3rd and goal, Jerry Kramer appeared to move early. No flag was thrown and Bart Starr snuck the ball over the goal line for the winning score. According to Starr, he asked Lombardi to call the sneak. Lombardi reportedly replied, "run it, and let's get the hell out of here."

Some have theorized that the referees did not see the False Start because then the Packers could have kicked a Field Goal to send the game into overtime. They wanted to get in the locker room as fast as they could too. No matter what you believe is the reason why no flag was thrown, the Packers went on to Super Bowl II having defeated the Cowboys in back to back NFL Championships for the right to face the AFL in the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys lead the all time regular season series 12-10. They lead the Post Season series 4-2. Lombardi being the only Packers coach to ever win against the Cowboys in the Post Season.

The Green Bay Packers had never lost to the Cowboys at Lambeau Field until last year. can the Cowboys pull off the repeat? Sunday, we find out.

Good stuff Hos. Never knew that about the Landry's Flex defense. You learned me.

I think you have a typo with the Lombardi (0-2) comment.?

You could light matches by touching me with them Ad. Hell, just get 'em close enough to me. I am radiation.

When we were 2-2 I predicted we'd finish 12-4 and win the NFC East. I couldn't be happier unless the wife were naked in the other room waiting for me.

Oh wait, she is. Now I am really happy.

Thank you for being one of the few level headed fans on this board.

That being said, dont get too happy, there's alot of football left, and this team has a tendency to not handle success very well.

I am right there with you.

I was on a webex with filthy and my screen name was Go Cowboys, lol. They did not like that one bit. To add insult to injury, Go Cowboys was my conference call name. When I logged off of the conference call, it stated, "Go Cowboys has left the conference call", I made sure I logged off first. :)

Excellent write-up Hos...You are perfectly right, football is king up here! This week is gonna be a very special week for me...It is something else when the Cowboys play Green Bay. I have so much respect for my home region and the GB fanbase, the history of both teams, and the personalities associated with them.

The Cowboys winning at Lambeau! Doesn't get any better! I wasn't able to score tickets but a couple of my buddies might get to go if their regular holders can't make it to the game...

We should be able to run it on GB. The way Rogers hold the ball the d line should have a field day!

Thats one of his fatal errors. He doesn't throw it away when he's being rushed, he'll tuck the ball or keep looking for a receiver while he's going down. He takes huge losses in yardage that way. I think the game will be an easy win for the Cowboys. Wade's probably chomping at the bit already. GB's line cannot protect their quarterback, they just can't...It's a done year for them already. They resigned Mark Taucher, who quickly proceeded to re-injure himself at Tampa. Not looking good for GB right now.

There are no such things in the Not For Long. Just like the previous games there will be some wrinkles that will catch us off guard, then we will adjust, and hopefully we can grind it out afterward.

What kind of weather can we expect for the game?

"All three of the Cowboys Super Bowl teams of the 1990's won Post Season matchups against the Packers."

Not so, the 1992 Dallas Cowboys defeated the Eagles 34-10 in the Divisional playoffs and the 49ers 30-20 in the NFC Championship.

Dallas did defeat the Packers 27-17 in the 1993 Divisional round and in the 1994 Divisional round they defeated them 35-9 but failed to win the Super Bowl after the 1994 season.

Dallas once again defeated Green Bay in the 1995 NFC Championship to the score of 38-27.
