They call Green Bay, Wisconsin "Titletown, USA." This is the result of 9 NFL Championships and 3 Super Bowls. More accurately it is the result of the Vince Lombardi years. No matter how great the Curly Lambeau years were in Green Bay, it is Vincent Thomas Lombardi who is responsible for that moniker. That's what happens when you deliver 3 NFL Championships and the first 2 Super Bowls.
To be fair, Lambeau's 6 NFL Championships laid the ground work for the nickname to be bestowed, but it will always be Lombardi for whom the dynasty is remembered. Curly Lambeau of course is the namesake of Lambeau Field where the Packers play and where the Cowboys come to visit on Sunday. Lambeau's 6 titles spanned a 30 year period. Lombardi's 5 happened in a 9 year span. Hence why Lombardi is so revered.
Well, that and he took over a team that was 1-10-1 and turned it into a dynasty. Lombardi's first two years we rebuilding years. So in reality, his 5 titles spanned a 7 year period. If you ever want to understand why Lombardi is associated with winning, if the History doesn't impress you Google "Vince Lombardi quotes" and read for yourself. There's a reason why the Super Bowl Trophy bears the man's name. He was perhaps the first coach ever consumed and possessed by winning.
The Packers were established in 1921. They had been an independent team for 2 years under Curly Lambeau in 1919 and 1920 when they were invited to join the NFL. Their roots may even pre-date 1919 as they had successful semi-professional teams dating back to the late 1890's. Many believe this is why the Packers have such rabid followings. They have always been about football in that area of the country.
When Lambeau established the Packers in 1919 the name came from the Indian Packing Company where Lambeau worked. His company provided the money for their uniforms and the name Green Bay Packers was born. They are the oldest franchise in professional football with a continuous name. Lambeau sought more financial backing to keep the team above water and he found four other investors who collectively were called "The Hungry Five." Including Lambeau these investors would become the backbone of the Green Bay Football Corporation. The nickname "Hungry Five" was allegedly given to these men because they always had their hand out for donations to keep their team alive.
The Green Bay Football Corporation, a non profit entity when formed, survived the Great Depression and other hardships by having stock sales in the team. For this reason the Packers remain the only NFL team that does not have a sole owner, but rather is a publicly owned company with an appointed board of directors. When the original documents of the corporation were put into place, the bylaws included a provision that if the team were ever sold the money would go to the American Legion to build a proper memorial for war veterans.
The "Hungry Five" are inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame. Curly Lambeau is the only one of the five who ever made any money from the corporation, his salary as coach. The team is now run by a Board of Directors (who were effectively created as they exist now in 1986) who oversee several community interests as well as team interests. The Chairman of the Board is Mark Murphy, the General Manager is Ted Thompson.
The Cowboys and Packers have had a glorious History against each other. It springs from the fact that Lombardi and Tom Landry were assistants with the New York Giants. Lombardi was the Offensive Coordinator and Landry was the Defensive Coordinator. Not many people know this, but Landry's Flex Defense was created specifically to stop Lombardi's rushing attack that featured Jim Taylor. Jim Taylor is the only RB to ever lead the NFL in rushing other than Jim Brown when Brown was playing. Eight of Brown's nine NFL seasons saw him lead the NFL in rushing, Jim Taylor led the only year he did not.
Landry never did stop Lombardi's Packers Offense (Lombardi was 0-2 against Landry and the Cowboys as Commanders Head Coach). The two coaching giants faced each other a total of five times while Lombardi was with the Packers, including twice in the Post Season. Lombardi's Packers won all five games. One of those games, and the last one where the two ever faced each other was the 1967 NFL Championship, dubbed "The Ice Bowl." This game is generally accepted as one of the greatest games in NFL History because the players performed under inhuman circumstances. Depending upon which report you believe, the wind chill factor made this game somewhere between -44 degrees and -48 degrees at game time.
The game ended on a controversial play. With the Packers knocking at the goal line on 3rd and goal, Jerry Kramer appeared to move early. No flag was thrown and Bart Starr snuck the ball over the goal line for the winning score. According to Starr, he asked Lombardi to call the sneak. Lombardi reportedly replied, "run it, and let's get the hell out of here."
Some have theorized that the referees did not see the False Start because then the Packers could have kicked a Field Goal to send the game into overtime. They wanted to get in the locker room as fast as they could too. No matter what you believe is the reason why no flag was thrown, the Packers went on to Super Bowl II having defeated the Cowboys in back to back NFL Championships for the right to face the AFL in the Super Bowl.
The Cowboys lead the all time regular season series 12-10. They lead the Post Season series 4-2. Lombardi being the only Packers coach to ever win against the Cowboys in the Post Season.
The Green Bay Packers had never lost to the Cowboys at Lambeau Field until last year. can the Cowboys pull off the repeat? Sunday, we find out.
