Gee, I got so caught up in reading the meltdown over at the Commanders message boards; I forgot to type my analysis.
Obviously, this was a tale of two halves. It seemed like the Cowboys were still feeling sorry for themselves during the first half. I was getting some irate over the lack of concentration and execution. FOUR facemask penalties in the 1st quarter? Are you kidding me? When did Parcells teach them how to tackle that way?
The one play that got me the angriest was the 4th and two around the 30-yard line. Now I can understand using a max protect, but to only send one player out on a route, with no TE to sneak out as a safety valve, is dumb in my opinion.
My favorite play though came in the first half believe it or not. Matt McBriar rocketed a punt that I believe has to be the “Greatest Punt in Cowboys History.” Now it was said that Ron Widby nailed an 84-yarder some 35 years ago. At this time, I do not know if there was a return, or other circumstances at that time in that ballgame. With McBriar’s blast, not only did it go 75 yards, but also it was COFFIN-CORNERED TO THE TWO!!!
With the way Dallas was playing, that was absolutely critical! It gave the Texans a 98-yard field. As it turned out, Houston’s only score after that was the field goal after the big punt return by Buchanon. McBriar made a saving stall (not tackle) for Elam to prevent Dallas’ second special teams TD in the first half of the season.
Game Ball – Matt McBriar!!!
Bledsoe. He didn’t have his best game. I am not going to be too critical of him has he had to contend with the elements. Regardless, there were some throws that just missed the target. The main miss was to Witten at the goal line.
Enough with the negativity! Dallas won 34-6 over the TEXANS! Regardless what the situation is, to avenge that 19-10 loss four years ago was sweet! I guess we don’t have to listen to those idiots to the southeast of Dallas for a while.
Nice to see Drew hook up with Terrell for those touchdowns. At least that will give the Giants something to think about for next Monday Night’s showdown in the Metroplex.
Offensive line struggled some in the first half, but in the end, the Cowboys end up with 354 yards of total offense, and about 180 yards rushing. Colombo struggle a little with Mario Williams, but played a decent game overall. Gurode still looks to be on a Pro Bowl level. The holding penalty prevented Bledsoe from getting killed.
The play that probably set the Cowboys loose was the 33-yard run by Julius Jones. Dallas never looked back after that.
Defensively, the Cowboys gave up six points, 232 yards total, and only 34 yards rushing. There were also two nice interceptions and a great strip by Kevin Burnett on a kickoff.
Anthony Henry and Terrance Newman played solid as usual. Newman gave up two passes – one to Moulds where Newman was right there but the ball was perfectly thrown. The other was an eight-yard out to Johnson who went out of bounds. So only giving up 23 yards is what I determine as a good game.
As many others, the big disappointment on the defense was the pass rush. This needs to step up next week or Eli will carve the Cowboys up.
FINAL Analysis: Yes, it was the Texans, but after last week, this was a win that the Cowboys needed to mentally prepare themselves for the oncoming onslaught of this brutal schedule.
