Have you ever wondered what a Seahawk is? Well, it actually is 2 words, sea hawk, but they really do exist. It's a predator bird from the raptor family and is sometimes called an osprey. They are brown and white not the blue and green colors that infect the Seattle uniforms. Just plain bad.
Seattle Ospreys just doesn't work though does it?
The Seahawks began play in 1976. The franchise was awarded to Lloyd Nordstrom. He was part of the Nordstrom family who founded avant garde department stores of the same name. He died before the Seahawks ever played their first game.
Eventually Ken Behring bought the Seahawks from the Nordstrom family. He later sold them to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, one of the richest men in the world.
In 1976 the Seahawks were awarded the 2nd pick in the NFL Draft. Fellow expansion team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were awarded the 1st pick. These 2 teams had the exact same draft spots in 1977 after the Buccaneers were 0-14 and the Seahawks 2-12.
The 1977 Draft featured 2 RBs taken at the top of the Draft. John McKay, the former Head Coach of the USC Trojans grabbed former Trojan RB Ricky Bell at the top of Draft. In doing so they had passed on Pittsburgh Heisman Trophy winner, Tony Dorsett. Tex Schramm and the Dallas Cowboys quickly swooped in to make a trade with the Seahawks.
The Cowboys originally owned the #24 pick in the 1977 Draft. They traded up with San Diego to the #14 spot. From #14 they traded up to #2 with Seattle. The Seahawks also received the Cowboys 2nd round pick, #41, which had also been acquired from the Chargers. With the 14 and 41 picks the Seahawks selected Steve August, an OG from Tulsa, and Terry Beeson, a LB from Kansas.
I think it is one of the most lopsided trades in NFL History.
The Cowboys and Seahawks have met 11 times in the regular season. The Cowboys lead the all time series 7-4. They are 4-2 in Dallas. They have also met one time in the Post Season. That was the 2006 infamous bobble game. The last game was last year on Thanksgiving, a game dominated by the Cowboys 34-9.
The Seahawks most successful season was 2005 when they faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XL. They ended up losing 21-10 and the Steelers won their 5th Super Bowl to match Dallas and San Francisco for the most in NFL History.
The Seahawks have also won 6 Division Championships in 2 different divisions. The Seahawks are the only team to change Conferences twice. In 1976 they were in the NFC. In 1977 they moved to the AFC West which they won twice. Once in 1988 and again in 1999. In 2002 NFL realignment sent the Seahawks back to the NFC West. They won 4 straight NFC West titles from 2004 to 2007.
The Seahawks have only two retired jersey numbers. One is #80 for Steve Largent. In 2004, Largent allowed Jerry Rice to wear that number. The other retired number is number 12. Don't strain yoruself trying to figure out which player it represents, because it doesn't represent any player. It is in honor of the Seattle fans, or 12th man. One of the most popular Seahawks jerseys is #12 with the name Fan on the back.
Enjoy the game.
