Of the places we need help on DL I think 3 technique behind Crawford may be the best opportunity. It's the spot we likely don't use a lot of resources to fill so Whaley and Coleman will have a shot to take Melton's role. Jack Crawford as well.

that does assume that they don't bring someone in like suh (unlikely) or bringing Melton back....but, after they basically red-shirted Whaley, I want to see why they thought so highly of him

Coleman, Bishop, Waley, Gardner, Okeye ---all just depth, or opportunity to really contribute?

From what I've see of Coleman, Bishop, and Gardner I would say yes with a full off season in the weight room and more money for a better diet, absolutely. Apparently there are good things being thought about Whaley as well. Okoye, I'm not so enamored with, even before his illness.

We do have a lot of DL coming back. The question I want answered is, are they just JAG's, playmakers or something inbetween?

I think you have to figure most will be JAG's or even less. But if the Cowboys got one solid contributor out of the group it would a nice bonus– and it could happen. Coleman and Bishop both flashed a wee bit of potential. We'll see what a full offseason along with a year's worth of NFL experience does for them in year #2.

They represent probabilities. With each added player that has potential, the probability of finding a good one increases.

Fork 'em.

Good. I like Coleman.

He had a nice preseason but as the season went on and players started coming back and getting healthy i think coaches saw how average he really is. I dont think he makes the team this yr.

Right now, Coleman has a good chance to make the team. The current DT's under contract besides him: Tyrone Crawford, Terrell McClain, Josh Brent, Ken Bishop, Amobi Okoye, and Chris Whaley. Now, if the Cowboys sign a prime free agent or draft a DT early, his chances look worse.

I definitely think Bishop has the physical ability to be a decent NFL player now, but just needs more development with technique and awareness. He was a small school guy that was so dominant that he didn't need any technique.

Coleman definitely has some nice quickness and just needs to get stronger.

Gardner is an unknown for me. He doesn't have ideal measurable(s) with short arms and limited speed, but he was a very good college player.

Whaley is an interesting player. If they liked him enough to intentionally pay him for a season to be on IR, then that's significant.

We'll see. He has a quick first step and was earning reps at the 3 until Crawford took that over and Melton came back. He got pinched from the roster because they needed his spot for Pellerin when we got thin at DB, and then with McClain hobbled and Hayden turning an ankle late, I think they went with Bishop as the better possible replacement fit.

EIther way, DL players take big jumps after weight training going into their second seasons. My bet is that Bishop benefits the most from that, but it'll help Coleman and Gardener, too.

It'll be a challenge for each of these long-shot DLs to make the roster. But give me the guy with a bit of attitude and the quick first step. If he puts in the work, he can carve out a shot for himself.

He should be. He's the Eli Manning of DT's. He has never missed a game.

There's something to be said about being available every week... Can he be upgraded sure... But a team needs guys like him...

Ken Bishop came in and immediately made an impact over Nick Hayden, which was sad.

Yes, I thought he was physically better than Hayden in those games he played early in the season. His developed skills were obviously under developed, but he is stronger and quicker than Hayden.

Bishop needs as many snaps as possible in training camp and OTAs/mini-camps.

Hopefully he gets them this year.

Hey, this guy can rush the passer. He is worth bringing back and I not sure he shouldn't have been on the roster all year.

He was on the 53 most of the year. He got injured at some point and they eventually cut him and put him on the practice squad.

I like the depth we have at DT. Some good upside on the rotational guys. Dallas doesn't value the 1T very highly and Brent and Bishop should replace a lot of the snaps Hayden got.

I would like to sign an impact DE like Hardy in FA and and draft a DT early in the draft.

Glad to see Coleman resigned.
He looks like a legit prospect.
Guessing he got some portion of his deal guaranteed or even a small signing bonus.

Whatever the case, he waited and the Cowboys didn't bail on him for waiting, but he did sign before anyone else could get to him.

As to DL depth. Obviously a mix of JAGs and developmental players. Not a strong group but solid inside; outside is much, much softer.
Dallas still likely adds a DL is they can get a pass rusher. But I don;t think it will be any break the bank type deals.

Thats what I was thinking as well

Yup, pretty close as well.

Coleman -- Think he just ran into the inevitable rookie wall issues. Had to bust tail in draft prep and in camp and wore down. Initial burst and quickness are building blocks. Might be a rotational guy this year.

Bishop -- Strong, plugger type who needs lots of reps and works but seems to have a future here as a run stopper. Might need another year on PS but a guy with a lot of upside. Could be a Hayden/Brent replacement as early as next year.

Whaley -- Think he is more a JAG. had good coaching and is experienced so a bit less upside but also a big body you'd like to keep attached until you get through camp in case of injury. Wouldn;t be shocking to me if he turned a corner and surpasses other guys who get nicked or whatever but odds on guy on outside looking in imho.

Gardner -- Is a SDE prospect and we need those badly. In a good position on the right team at the right time. Should stick if he can get healthy. If not will likely get the Matt Johnson treatment as a preferred walking injury prospect.

Percent guesstimates to make this final 2015/6 roster: (includes health risk, perceived value and position needs on roster)
Gardner 75%
Coleman 70%
Bishop 60%
Whaley 35%

This is likely a make or break camp for Okoye, but all of these are development players -- time will tell.
