The media has a narrative and an agenda and have been overstepping in their efforts to "get the scoop" on this story all year long, and they have really jammed this up. Bottom line is that JJ has said all along (IMO-- he has spoken waaaaaay too much-- but what else is new) that he is open to keeping Romo this year. It's just that no one believes him b/c of the price tag.
The news of the release of Romo was leaked by reporters-- not anyone in the Dallas front office. Then-- everyone in the media freaked out when Dallas was trying to trade Romo-- the first day they were actually allowed to pursue a trade under league rules by the way. And the narrative now is that somehow JJ has lied to Romo and broken his word that he was going to release him. The truth is NO ONE but JJ and Romo knows what has or has not been said between them.
Anyone who thinks they know when Tony will or not be released is guessing. Anyone who knows when or how or who he will be traded to is also guessing. The only thing we know is that the longer this drags on-- the more intense the pressure will become for the front office to "do something". If they hold onto him-- they will have to be ok with paying him his salary, being viewed as screwing Tony over in general, and the perception of creating unnecessary pressure on Dak due to having Romo looking over his shoulder.
IMO-- keeping Romo as a backup even with all those downsides >>> than just cutting him. 1) we can afford his salary, even though its not ideal. 2) we have paid Tony a TON of money and by keeping him, we are honoring the contract. I'm fine with keeping an asset that has value for my football team-- which is exactly what Tony is. 3) Dak's rapid development is what has forced an early transition with Romo. He did not have an issue taking the job-- so I do not have an issue with him having the pressure to keep his job. He's a man and a leader. I expect both men to be professionals and handle their business.
Romo's contract is built for him to be released next year-- not 2017. This decision has to be made in what is in the best interest of the TEAM. Not Dak. Not Romo. The 2017 Dallas Cowboys would be a better team with Romo on the roster. Better talent-wise. Better financially. If another team wants to trade for Romo and pay fair value for an NFL franchise caliber QB-- I'd listen to offers.
