We're better suited for a 3-4 defense

I know we just converted a 4-3 a few years back, but imagine having Lee and McClain in the middle, with Gregory and Lawrence manning the outside linebacker spots. Thoughts?

What I was hoping for after Jerry fired Rob, was that he would allow Garrett to pick his D coordinator. I think it would have been Kirby Smart and we would have remained in the 3-4.

Instead, Jerry followed Larry Lacewell's advice and chose Kiffin, who proceeded to field the historically bad 2013 defense.

Not sure it would be much different than it is now. McClain and Lee are playing the two big LB roles in this scheme and Hardy, Gregory and Lawrence are free to try to get after the passer instead of also being relied on in coverage. Hardy also would have to play OLB because we certainly wouldn't want to use him as a 3-4 end unless we're playing the Phillips 3-4.

It has been shown before that Garrett interviewed Kiffin and chose him. Jerry was overseas somewhere at the time.
This is the first I ever heard Garrett wanted Kirby at all.

Go ask Jerry Hughes and Mario Williams how they like their sacks numbers falling off the face of the earth because they have to cover guys in Rex Ryan's 3-4.

I want no part of a 3-4 defense, thought is was asinine too switch to it in the first place

Same here. As soon as Parcels started that, I thought here goes 4 years set back on the D. Then to stick with it, they bring in Ryan. I am thinking still a setback as long as he is here.
Then the switch back to the 4-3, i was glad, but was thinking here is another 4 years to get it right. We are in the 3rd year of it, but really year number 2 under Marinelli. And year one under Kiffin was the injury depleted year of 18 different DL, not to mention other positions.

And that was not Garrett's fault for an 8-8 season with how many different players used. on offense and defense....but have been a total of close to 80 different players at least on the roster that year.
That is how Garrett kept that team a win away from the playoffs with that many player changes and many from off the street.

The 3-4 defense should be banned from this franchise forever.

I hate everything about it, and it is extremely vulnerable to read-option offenses. No thanks.

Really?

The 3-4 in Dallas produced the single greatest pass rusher of this generation, two more Pro Bowl LBs, an All-Pro nose tackle, and a slew of highly sought after defensive linemen.

The change back to a 4-3 ended the tenure of the previously mentioned greatest pass rusher, exposed one of those Pro Bowl LBs to increased injuries, produced two of the worst defenses in franchise/NFL history, and set us on a 4 year quest to find down lineman that can consistently get to the QB while playing with their hand in the dirt. It put us in such dire straights that we were forced to assume tremendous risk in signing the most despised player in the league.

Our expectations are so low that we're thrilled if get a single sack in the 4th quarter and/or generate a single turnover during the course of the game, but the 3-4 defense was the problem?

The Bills have been running a version of his defense for years. Mike Pettine was their defensive coordinator in 2013, and Williams had 13 sacks. Jerry Hughes had 10 sacks.

We would be ATROCIOUS against the run, and Lee would be hurt taking on guards every play almost immediately.

Last season Jim Schwartz was their coordinator and they ran a traditional 4-3.

Mario Williams had 14.5 sacks last season and Darius had 10 from the DT position.

So far Williams has 3 sacks this season, Darius 2 and Hughes (who had 10 last season) has 4.

And none of them are happy campers.

It's too late to go back now, outside of Lee, most of our defensive players are better in the 4-3. I hated the switch to 4-3 back in 2013, I thought we were on the verge of having a solid to great 3-4 defense with Carter being a great fit for the role we put him in. Ware was practically ruined by the need of bulking up.

But we made the switch and we don't have to the players to go back. But both the 3-4 and 4-3 can be successful and it's just dumb to think otherwise.

It also produced the worst statistical defenses in Cowboy franchise history.

Outside of Gregory, maybe, we don't have a single defensive lineman suited to play in a 34. We are light in the *** as it is, expecting any combination of three guys we have to man the line would be ugly. Lawrence at outside linebacker? That's about as likely and has about as much chance for success as Gregory playing nose tackle.

Stay in the 43. Stay aggressive. Add talent.
