the 26 teams who passed on Marino?

He mentioned in his Hall of Fame speech that he really was upset that 26 teams passed on him in the '83 draft, and he always lied when asked that question before. But he did thank them for it.

I do think we were one of them, because back then there were 28 teams(or was it 30?) in the league, but I am not sure. Did we have one of the first 26 picks in the '83 draft?

If so.....

Does anybody remember who we drafted with our first pick that year instead of Marino?

And in my opinion, Marino was the best NFL QB to never win the Super Bowl.

I think it was Jim Jeffcoat. I remember seeing the list. That was a great draft for many of the team IMHO.

Remember, the rap on Marino at the time was that his senior season was less-than-spectacular, (he even admitted as much) so the fact that Schramm & Landry passed him up like so many others is not surprising... look at Montana, he wasn't drafted until the 3rd or 4th round in 1979.

I had it in my head that there were 5 QBs taken ahead of Marino but it looks like there were only 4; Elway, Blackledge, Eason and Kelly. Were any of those other guys QBs?

But in defense of those teams looking for a QB that year three of those four went to superbowls; Elway (who finally won a couple) and Kelly multiple times and Eason once. And Marino also had bad knees coming out of college which was a big concern and is why Marino was never a mobile QB.

You were right the first time.. O'Brien was another QB taken by the Jets... I remember that shootout he and Marino had in 1986 like it was yesterday.

That was a pretty sound first round.

Look at the talent up and down...Marino and Green finishing it off.

Very rare.

I never understood the Michael Haddix pick and I still remember Dr.Z ripping the pick.

As listed above by DallasEast...

1. John Elway, Colts
7. Todd Blackledge, Chiefs
14. Jim Kelly, Bills
15. Tony Eason, Patriots
24. Ken O'Brien, Jets

So you were originally correct, there were five....

Ohhh, on a side note, I almost freaked out with...

3. Curt Warner, Seahawks...(Not him...LOL)

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Ken O'Brien is the one I can never remember on that list. I don't know why though; he was better than Blackledge at least.

That is a pretty amazing group. Four Hall of Famers, plus another 2 guys who will be (Matthews and Green) and a guy who has a college football award named after him (Rimington).

Bills had 2 picks, Chargers had 3 so 26 teams didn't pass on him.

At the time, we were not really looking for a QB. The strike was in 1982, and we were 12-4 the year before with White, and in Marino's first year of 1983 we also went 12-4 and White threw for almost 4000 yds and had 29 TD's.

We also had the promising youngster Gary Hogeboom.

Why would you need a Dan Marino?
