The search for a kick returner

The injury to Miles Austin has created a need for a kick returner.

Isaiah Stanback will get time there, coach Wade Phillips says rookie corner Orlando Scandrick may also return kicks and he said Adam 'Pacman' Jones has expressed interest in the job.

However, one guy who may not yet do it is rookie running back Felix Jones, who was a dynamic returner at Arkansas.

"We haven't said 'no he's not going to do it,'" Phillips said.

The coach first wants to see who else can do the job, so Felix Jones can stay fresh for offense.

Coach Wade Phillips praised Cowboys rookie cornerback Mike Jenkins, who is getting lots of work with the first team defense with the injury to Terence Newman.

Phillips says he keeps competing and doesn't get discouraged.

"I think it's good he played against top competition and had some troubles," the coach said. "He'll get better and better."

Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips says being back at Valley Ranch is good for his team.
"I think we probably had our best practice of the year so far," he said.

The coach praised quarterback Tony Romo and the defense.

"Our concentration was good, there weren't many mental errors," he said. "(Romo) had another good day."

I'm glad he's been getting all this time with Newman healing up. This will help Jenkins down the stretch and make him that much better for us throughout the year.

Jenkins will only get better if he is learning from his mistakes. I'd like to see him make some improvement this week and next week.

Hi. My name is Felix Jones. I'm one of the greatest kick returners of all time from the college ranks, and I'm sitting right under your noses. I can change games with my ability on kick returns. Stop being little girls and just make me the starting KR already.

I thought Scandrick had a very good return against Denver. He came very close to breaking out, he made some very good cuts as well.

Yeah, lets not give him an extra 4-5 touches a game where he can change the game because them 4-5 touches might tire him out for offense. Makes sense to me.

Why wouldn't we have Pac and Felix back there? I can't think of a single legit reason.

Its the paradox of Special Teams. Teams stress the importance of all 3 phases of the game (O, D & ST) but when it comes right down to it are afraid of putting key players from O & D on ST's becuase of injuries.

Felix Jones is going to be very important for the offense. No need to risk him on kickoffs. If someone else can do it as good or nearly as good as Felix, then let Scandrick or Stanback do it.
