Coupe things really stuck with me regarding the Cowboys opening presser and I'm not sure if either are good.
Its was a snoozer, by the way, an hour that seemed like a couple and in Jerry Jones media savvy mind I wonder if he's not under-mining his quarterback. It came off as both Wade and Jerry bending over backwards to make sure we know that Tony Romo's been working hard and that he's developing into the leader that this offense/team needs him to be. Seriously, I felt like I was on a car lot there for a few minutes. If Romo really has done all the work, we'll find out about it soon enough and we didn't need the owner and coach shoving it down our throats. The respect a true leader gains is something that's earned on the field and not thrust upon in the press room.
Keeping with the car theme - Cowboy fans, here's hoping Romo is a Honda. Salesmen on those lots don't have to do much. Its not flashy - but if you change the oil and maintain it, it'll run forever. Its efficient and dependable. The Salesman doesn't have to give you a 5-star pitch - the car speaks for itself. We'll see if Romo can do the same. (You can bash me now for not mentioning an American car maker - but tell me I'm wrong.)
And this a much more minor matter, but did you see Wade Phillips opening comments in the presser. After saying it was football time and he was ready to get started, he slapped the table. Full disclosure - I like Phillips as a car - couldn't be nicer to deal with - but that move came off as trying too hard as well.
Let's see if the team can try as hard on the field.
