I don't know the answer to this, but I do know that I'm part of the problem....
A couple quick thoughts on Terrell Owens. I think he has the maturity of a 12-year-old, I KNOW that he manipulates the media (in one case it led to him being the lead story on Sports Center), and I thought the Cowboys served themselves well to let him go in the off-season.
But then there's this: when we did a story on DeSoto's Corey Borner -- the young man who is now in a wheelchair after suffering a football injury in May -- he told us about another side of Owens. Corey said that when he was in the hosptial, Owens came to visit him while he was in town for his football camp. And not only did he visit Corey, Owens stayed with him for nearly two hours. It's one thing for a professional athlete to donate money, but when a pro athlete gives that much of his time, that really is special.
So I guess what I'm saying is that Owens is a bit complex, and it's not a good idea to catagorize him totally as a bad guy or a totally good guy.
Yesterday I read this article about Owens' meet with the media Sunday after the game, in which he was held without a catch for the first time since 1996. The Buffalo media has been accused of baiting Owens (rightfully so, especially the one guy who suggested Owens just answer "no" to their question). This article makes the point that while Owens didn't say anything wrong, he also didn't say anything right. If you have a few minutes, the article makes for an interesting read. I thought the writer brought up some good points, but then I come from the media. Fans and readers seemed to think differently, judging from the few comments I read.
Owens met with the media again today, so if you're interested in the follow up, you can read it here. It's nothing earth-shattering.
