Nothing until proven otherwise. Josh McDaniels never played and he is one of the best OCs in football. Means nothing. Garrett is a former player and he sucks. Belichick never played in the NFL and he is the best of all time.
HOF coaches all, Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi and Weeb Ewbank never played in the league, while Tom Landry, Don Shula and Chuck Noll were JAGS.

Conversely, HOF players Otto Graham, Bart Starr, Norm Van Brocklin, Forrest Gregg and Mike Singletary were mediocre NFL coaches, whereas Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick never played, but is/will be, respectively, HOFers.

IMO, having played in the league has no provable direct correlation to NFL coaching success.

For those that never played in the NFL, did they play in college?

Having played is something of an advantage, but it doesn't appear to be a major one. A lot of good, and even great coaches never played at the pro level.

If I were a GM, I wouldn't care too much about NFL playing experience for coaches...

Belichick attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where he played center and tight end. In addition to being a member of the football team, he played lacrosse and squash, serving as the captain of the lacrosse team during his senior season.

After graduating, Belichick took a $25-per-week job as an assistant to Baltimore Colts head coach Ted Marchibroda in 1975.[21] In 1976, he joined the Detroit Lions as their assistant special teams coach before adding tight ends and wide receivers to his coaching duties in 1977.

You might want to check Landry's career as a player. His NFL career was short, but he was a bit more than a JAG.

maybe, maybe not...he sucked without billicheck. under bilicheck and with brady, he thrives...perhaps Brady and Bilicheck can make anyone look good. in fact none of the coaches from Bilicheck coaching tree have amounted to anything.

but I agree with the premise, that you don't need to be a former player to be a good coach.

This is a key(maybe THE key) to being a a very good coach. Experience in all aspects of the game. Special teams, D, offense.

Being a QB, QB coach, then offensive coordinator is not a key.

Totally wrong about McDaniels. Look at the record without Brady. In 2008 they went 11-5 without Brady. 5th ranked offense. He won with Matt Cassell. He was not ready for the Broncos job and had no QB.

yes, one year. and don't forget in that year, they came in 3rd in their own division, which tells me about the level of competition that division played that year...

he is not all that IMO. Brady makes everyone look good.

Clearly you don’t like the guy. You must have missed the wins with Jimmy G and Jacoby B. Brady is awesome but McDaniels system is top notch.

I didn't say I don't like the guy. I just don't think he is an Elite OC. you are assuming I don't like him. IMO, he is good OC, not elite.
