Paul Pasqualoni and Todd Bowles.

This promotion is coming from within fellas. Get ready for another Dumb and Dumber performance by our defense.

The people who learned this defense from older coaches are all employed.

Dom capers
Dick lebeau
Mike nolan
romeo crennel
Eric mangini
wade phillips
al groh

that is most of the nfl coordinators and groh who run this system. It is a difficult position to fill for us because it has to be someone who has history with the scheme, most of those types of guys are already employed.

You see more coaches running a 4-3 because they are part of the generation of assitants who came up when Dallas, Tampa, Denver, green bay were winning and that is what the coaches learned and copied.

Its kind of ironic that most of this board wants a 4-3 brought back, and they want coaches like pete carroll, jim bates, lovie smith etc....those are zone defensive coordinators. Cover 2 or in bates case he comes from Dallas days of cover 4 looks.

We play this defense because parcells wants one on one matchups and the ability to drop 8 men into coverage at anytime. With a solid pass rush it would work very well. Better play up front is needed for us to succeed in this.

However all the no more cover 2 or zone defense talk is flawed because any of todays 4-3 coordinators are cover 2 decendents. The ryan bros mix their fronts and are aggressive. that would be 100 percent shift in philosophy and would be fun to watch, but wont happen with parcells here.

IF things stay the same we need two more pass rushers and then ellis to be healthy. Time is the ultimate back breaker to zone schemes, and seeing that we were dropping 8 guys alot, time needs to be taken away from the quarterback.

It is an extremely difficult hire for us, because the coaching pool is small to pick from and most of them are proven guys like capers who said no right away, by the way capers defense wasnt all that great in houston and all his players complained about hating his defense.

Going to be a long offseason. I still havent come to grips that it is the offseason. Watching seattle play chicago is going to be very difficult. If seattle wins, Well I may be sick for 6 months.

Dick Lebeau from steelers.

He is under contract for 2007 and in no way they will let him go unless for a HC job.

I would have no problem with one of the understudies from one of these successful 3-4 defensive teams.

Who are they in Pittsburgh, San Diego and Cleveland.

I don't know what experience Bowles has in the 3-4, I thought he came from Cleveland when they were a 4-3. I don't like that, but I guess that is what you might get if BP stays. ( and my main concern if BP stays) Pasq, I don't know what experience he has in it either. If he does then OK, not so bad.

The most frustrating thing to watch was that when we did blitz, it was terribly ineffective.

And....whether it is scheme or talent, our upfront people do not get the necessary pressure. Is it coaching or talent. I tend to think a bit more coaching than lack of talent. For ex., a guy like Spears was very aggressive in college and got his fair share of sacks. He rarely sniffs the QB here.

Some of these things just don't make sense.

I wouldn't count on Ellis being a big factor in the D next season, at least not for the first half. Doesn't it usually take about a year for someone to come back from an Achilles injury? There's also no guarantees (See K. Smith).

Or we could allow a young D some continuity rather than a complete shift.

The problem isn't the scheme -- it is execution. Payton exposed us because he isolated a couple of guys he saw as the weak links in the D.

Agreed, but Carp came on nicely towards the end there and may be able to fill in that spot nicely.

Absolutely have to get more pressure from the front 3 next year.

My hope is that Jerry calls up his buddy Al Davis and tries to work a deal for Rob Ryan. Many head coaches want their own staff and Al tends to hire offensive minded coaches so maybe we could pry him away for a friendly discount.

I think the league does not allow compensation for anyone but head coaches.

maybe JJ has some pull with a padre or a priest somewhere; AL will be needing all the help he can get there pretty soon!!!

I wonder who the top defensive assistants are under Belichek. I don't think you can help but learn from a guy like that. Perhaps we could steal one of them to promote to DC. Pasqualoni might not be a bad option. The guy was putrid as a HC at Syracuse, but mostly because he could not recruit and couldn't deal with the media at all. As far as football goes I think he's supposed to be pretty sharp. He might surprise a lot of you.
