What a contender needs from the draft

every year is at least 1-2 starters and 1-2 either role players or good backups. And at least one of them needs to be near PB caliber. Over a period of 6 years you keep the roster filled with talent. In this day and age, cheap FA's for depth and finding UDFA's like Romo are the other keys. You can finish it off with one or two expensive FA's.

We need another RB. One that doesn't run into piles.

seriously thought we need a backup NT, a backup RG, a backup speedy wr, a starting FS, a backup C, punt returner

I'd like ted ginn jr, he be like santonio holmes, start out returning punts then work his way into the wr lineup.

Cowboyz, i think you were pretty accurate on cowboys needs, but I think you forgot a few.
first, glaring need is a very good FS, I think Pat Watkins is that guy in time. Next, is a big time pass rusher, to play at LB/DE opposite Ware, then a good NT, Fergueson is 33, not many more years left for him. Then impact young WR, OT-and a OG, then backup center.

Then, you can bet that next year, if Parcells is with the team, he will draft another TE, due to Pierces 2nd knee surgery, and Hannaman injury. If you were watching the dallas morning news, and this board, you would have seen that Parcells was talking with Zimmer and they were looking at slash smaller type DE/LB for the upcoming draft, so i think they are going that route again in 1st to 3rd round.

Then , I am of mind like the Chicago Bears, and Jimmy Johnsons team when he drafted little wr johnson punt returner in 2nd round. We need a really good punt and kickoff returner, to step up our special teams.

Finally, I am sure you aware of watching Gramatica kickoffs, they looked pretty bad to me, so I still say we need to get a good kicker, I am hoping we draft one in 3rd or 4th round, or get that really good kicker from Seattle, I think he is a free agent next year.

That would fill out our roster then, out of all of these needs, I think we can fill 3 of them on free agency. So, that would leave 5 draft spots to fill in the upcoming draft.

Backup NT: We re-signed Montavious Stanley, I'm hoping he's it

Backup RG and Backup C: Corey Proctor is the backup and hopefully future at RF. Eli Whitley will come back from IR in the offseason and he can play G or C. Al Johnson is probably gone.

Backup speedy WR: Hurd/Austin. They aren't "burners" but they are decent and developing WRs and quality STers. I think we need a future #1 (Calvin Johnson and Dwayne Jarrett come to mind or Andre Johnson) I wouldn't be unhappy with Ted Ginn either but I don't see him being a stud WR, only a ST'er and utility guy.

Starting FS: Their names are Parrish, Davis, and Watkins. I don't think we'll go after anyone else this offseason either in FA or the draft. I think its safe to count on Watkins to come around and Parrish to hold it down until then.

I think we'll stand pat as far as the starting OL goes. We may churn backups but looks like BP trusts McQ and Proctor with Whitley coming back off IR. We may not be that bad off. Rivera is the glaring weakness.

We need a passrusher; I'd love to go get Adalius T. from the Ravens.
We need a backup QB, probably a vet, definitely a vet if BP likes how Matt Baker is coming along
We may take a long look at RBs in the draft, JJ has been pretty average.
We need a mid to late round CB with potential to take over for Glenn when he retires or start and move Henry to FS
Punt returner: need one, I expect another draft pick to find one

We can well afford to go BPA...

In an ideal world, I would like the following:

1. Backup/successor to Ferguson (Stanley?)
2. OLB to complement Ware (Burnett/Carpenter?)
3. FS (think Watkins is long-term answer but hoping Parrish good enough for this year and hope next year as well?). Keeping fingers crossed
4. CB (first day pick; Glenn getting older & Henry somewhat inconsistent so this player needs become a starter 1-2 years down the road).
5. OG (replacing Riveria 1-2 years but maybe Proctor's the guy?)
6. WR/PR/KR
7. FG kicker (Gramatica seems good but kicks not deep enough)
8. Backup depth behind Romo
9. RB who replaces Jones unless Jones can start getting some longer runs again.
10. OT (replace Adams within 2 years--maybe McQuistan the answer but don't want to bet on it)

That's a lot of needs and some may be filled from within.

isn't sam hurd a gunner on kick offs and punts?
and aren't those guys ussually pretty darn fast?
we are pretty good at WR I woudl say.

Only thing I want to see us pick up is some decent RB to compete with jones and barber for the starting role.

We need a passrusher;
LB/Passrushers: G Adams, Q Moses, L Woodley, Anthony Spencer

Anthony Spencer is the sleeper candidate. He got little press compared to Woodley. Purdue players v. Michigan players. Spencer has a 4.5 40 time when recruited by Purdue. He was double teamed most of the season also. Here is a Woodley v. Spencer comparison. Who looks better to you?

Forced Fumbles - Spencer 5, Woodley 4
Passes Defended - Spencer 6, Woodley 0
Blocked kicks - Spencer 1, Woodley 0
Sacks - Spencer 10.5, Woodley 11
TFL - Spencer 26.5, Woodley 15.5
Solo Tackles - Spencer 64, Woodley 25
Safeties - Spencer 1, Woodley 0

Purdue does very well with DEs and tweeners to LBs Akin Ayodele, Rosevelt Colvin, Gilbert Gardner, Shaun Phillips and Chike Okeafor to name a few.

Did you check out my sig? Spencer is on there, I had him in bold but the bold put me over my 500 character limit. I agree totally. Much better value for similar player to Woodley. Spencer may even be better to play the OLB than Woodley would be.

Spencer, Ross, and Kolb are my sleeper picks...but I'd trade them all for Calvin Johnson...:D

Yes I did, I was quoting you because of your insight. I am a bit prejudiced though as Spencer went to Purdue as well as my High School. Spencer is truly a beast. I think he bench presses about 500lbs also. He may be the best DE to ever come out of Purdue.

If we don't end up trading up for a stud like CJ or AP, I could see us trading down (I can more see that anyway) and stockpiling 2nd's and 3rd's, in which case someone like Spencer and Aaron Ross would be perfect picks (value plus need) for us IMO.

This is the classic ambiguous sentence.

It could mean we need more posters who are intelligent.

Or it could mean the ones we already have need more intelligence.

(Or it could mean gametime can't come fast enough.)

Ferguson is nor 33, he's 31 but yes depth would be nice. Two wideouts who will be 33 next year is what really needs to be examined along with o-line depth.

Go easy on the guy tonite, Rack.

In about 30 minutes when he sees Troy Smith go up to that podium, it will be all the punishment he should have to take.:D
