Nice!

Arch or Alder?

I wanted to look at what the LA Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles had to spend to move up in 2016 draft to obtain their mediocre (so far) qbs. LA traded six picks for Geoff. One number one, two number twos, and their third round pick in 2016. The Titans also got LA number one and third round picks in 2017. The Titans had to give Rams some lower round picks in 2016.
Philadelphia gave up their first , third and fourth picks in 2016. They also traded their number one pick in 2017 and their number two round pick in 2018. The Eagles got Wentz and a conditional fifth that could become a fourth in 2017 draft.
The Dallas Cowboys picked Dak Prescott with pick number 135 in the fourth round. That was a compensatory pick for a free agent that we lost. I have to pinch myself to see how fortunate we were to use a late fourth round pick for our next franchise quarterback who also happens to be the best rookie quarterback in the entire 2016 class. Make no mistake if Dak had not worked out we would have to spend a ton of quality draft picks to try and move up for a shot at a franchise quarterback. Now we can use those precious picks to fill other needs on our team. I would like to see most of those going on the defensive side of the ball. If we have a quality draft in 2017 look out NFL. Would anyone like to use the word dynasty for what were building here in North Texas? Go Cowboys

The Eagles did make up some lost ground by ripping off the Vikings in that absurd Bradford deal. Ripping off the Vikings in a trade -- those jerks. We would never do a thing like that.

"Steal" implies we went in there with the intention to pick Dak, when the fact is we totally lucked our way into him. Remember, it took two injuries to QBs in front of him for him to play.

I think Dak would have played his way past a healthy Kellen Moore in the preseason anyway, but I see your point.

Yes.
Insanely good fortune.

I think many (not all) of us did not agree with the Rams and Philly selling the farm (present and future) for those two particular QBs.
But IF they do end up being true top 7-8 franchise type guys in the long haul, then it was worth it.
Big if though.

In any case, Dallas miraculously gets their guy for almost free. :oldcouple:

Philly actually gave up more to get Wentz. They had to do following to get up to #2

Trade from #13 to #8:
1) Kiko Alonso to Miami (having good year in Miami - Possible comeback player of year)
2) Byron Maxwell to Miami (having decent year in Miami)

Trade from #8 to #2:
3) 1st rounder (#8 in '16)
4) 1st rounder in 2017
5) 2nd rounder in 2017
6) 3rd rounder (#77 in '16)

I eliminated the 4th rounders they swapped. So Eagles gave up 6 players for Wentz.
Thanks Wood. I overlooked how the Eagles traded from 13 to 8. Again it just shows how fortunate we are to merely spend a late round fourth for our quarterback of the future! Go Cowboys

here we go with this "luck" discounts again, weird

Ok, you guys forgot Romo, he also helped !!
Tony getting hurt in 2015 and Murray leaving led to the bad season, which led to picking at #4 in each round !!
Murray leaving gives Dallas the pick used to pick Dak so send him your thank you cards.
Tony getting hurt again in Seattle, led to Dak having to start and getting 5-6 games to show what he could do.
And also thanks to kellen who also got hurt.
If Kellen and Tony dont get hurt , Dak never plays, and he is just a 3 string guy who maybe looked good late in PS games.
He might have gone to practice squad, and then wound up grabbed by some other team.
He could have been on sidelines for years, getting stale and fat,and losing motivation!

But as some powerful fates would have it, he got to play as starter in 1st PS game, and 2nd PS game, he looked great,
so tony says I will start game 3 !! I will show this young stud how it is done !
Tony gets hurt in 3 plays, Dak takes over plays and wins, then starts game 1 and onward.

So it was lucky 1st that he came out in the same draft we are picking @ # 4, our highest pick in how long?
and we had compensatory pick.
Then the injurys more luck, good for some bad for tony and kellen.
These lead to Dak playing way before he was supposed to . which I think again was lucky, and perfect.
Why ? Dak was pissed about the draft, and being picked so low, glad it was cowboys, but he wanted to show
every other team that they made a huge mistake not picking him in 1st round.

He has done just that, the media ,scouts, teams, gm's , owners, are all wondering how they missed this guy, and are wishing
they could have got him.

It is all a perfect storm, Dak was ready to play, and I think it was better for him to start right away rather than learn from the bench,
which I dont really think anyone learns much from standing there with clipboard.
But Dak was ready and had something to prove, and was dying to just play, and he got his chance, and on his favorite team,
which happens to have very good OL , and just got EE.

And away they go, I think once they won the 3rd game, they realized this kid could play and win games, and they liked winning, after all
the losing last year, and they started upping their game to match how Dak plays, and they just kept winning and getting better,
and bonding as a team, and the team spirit comes from Dak and what he keeps saying.

So a whole bunch of dominoes fell leading to all this, and it is unique, and no one person or group should get credit for it,
it just happened, and it was if anything, just a bunch of luck.

You think we picked him without having had any intention of doing so? What, we threw a dart at a list of available players and it hit his name or something?

It's true that we had several QBs ranked ahead of him and to that extent our evaluation of him was off, like everyone else's. It doesn't follow that we lucked into him. We drafted him, before anyone else. By implication we valued him more than anyone else. In other words, our evaluation, while off like everyone else's, was still better than everyone else's.

I note in passing that there's something odd about a criticism of the front office that wouldn't be available to anyone if Jerry and the boys had *only* spent #4 overall pick on Dak, rather than #135. I guess I'd rather be *lucky* if the alternative is to pay far more for the player.

Actually, the OP is correct. The term "steal" is typically used to describe a team acquiring a high value player with a low round draft pick. The OP concludes that Dallas getting a high value player like Dak with a 4th round compensatory pick was literally a "steal" i.e. getting something for nothing. You are incorrect, and I don't know why you were trying to correct the OP in the first place. Most fans here know exactly what he meant. A team's intentions or plans have nothing to do with it. It is just the way the draft played out. Jimmy Johnson was a master at this.

We got 4th round comp picks for both Murray and Parnell, but lost one in signing Greg Hardy. I'm not sure if the NFL ever said which pick was offset but it was either Murray or Parnell.
I am pretty sure it was Parnell since the Murray loss was offset by the signing of Greg Hardy

Would be hard to argue with Tom Brady for a 6th round pick was not the best value ever... Roger Stauback for a 12th rounder was pretty good value too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best value pick in the draft.

Before we get all to high and mighty on our front office because they may have had the best draft since Jimmy Johnson was here, let's remember if we had few other recent drafts where we were even half as good as this year maybe the defense wouldn't be so weak...I believe The Great Wall Of Dallas was built without using any first round picks, and our current line has 3 number 1's. When Jimmy was here he was the master at finding value...the front office got lucky here if any team even thought Dak would be this good this soon he would have been drafted long before the 4th. I'm just thankful we got lucky but not so thankful that we spent our number 2 on a guy that won't help this team this year when clearly we'd all feel a little more positive about a super bowl run with a consistent pass rush. I'm not one to say wait until next year, just look at Carolina...maybe we'll be consistent for years, like NE and Seattle, but this is football and serious injuries to a few key players can set you back at anytime.

The Titans could easily turn into TITANS with their current base of talent plus all those picks.

The picks they got from the Rams are going to be super high as that team is broken and not likely to be repaired soon.

Dang that's almost like the H. Walker trade.
