Since Albert seems it would be in the Cowboys' best interests to name Flozell Adams the franchise player, I thought I'd take another look at the franchise tag.
How about naming Ken Hamlin the franchise player? It would cost the Cowboys half as much $4.396 million) to tag Hamlin than it would be to tag Adams ($9 million). And if they were to give Adams the franchise tag, then that would eat up just about all of their remaining cap room. Then the team would have to re-work a ton of contracts to come up with more room to sign free agents.
Hamlin just played in his first Pro Bowl after picking off a career-high five passes and generally serving as the quarterback of the secondary. He brought a much needed sense of calm to the secondary in terms of getting everybody lined up correctly.
Thoughts?

Really the question is who are you more comfortable having as a starter, Doug Free at LT or Pat Watkins at FS?

I'd rather let Flo go and tag Hamlin personally (if it comes down to that). The young guys have to play at some point.

There are a few things we could do:
Draft Gosder Cherilus or Chris Williams with one of our 1sts
or
Let Free and Mcquiston fight it out in a battle to the death and we come out with a Super OT that has the quick feet of Free but the mean and ugly of Mcq

Hamlin signed a cheap 1 year deal in a gentleman's agreement to earn a long term contract.

Jerry would not do that to him.

Its bad for business.

I think so as well. Shouldn't be long and Jerry will have a contract for the Hamster.

i remember how giddy they were in the war room when they got Free in the
4th. i think they view him as the future at LT, the only question is if they think he is ready this year.

$4M plus is a bit steep for Hamlin. Hamlin is good but he is not one of the elite safeties in the league.

Hamlin is a couple of tiers below Ed Reed, Sanders, Polamalu, Adrian Wilson, the late Sean Taylor or even old-timers like Harrison, Dawkins or Lynch.

jerry was also feeling pretty good when he drafted quincy carter to be the future of the cowboys. doug free may be a very good player now or down the road, but the question is that we simply do not know how he will turn out at this very moment. it is just too much of a gamble to trust romo's blindside on an unknown with potential.

no doubt jerry will offer hamlin a long term contract, but hamlin may or may not like the financial details in it. if other teams come calling with a big contract offer, he is not give the cowboys a discount for giving him a chance when other teams wouldn't, or give jerry a razorback alumnus discount for that matter.

After the years of trying to find a guy who can make our safety tandem work, we finally get him and so many here are so easily willing to let him go?

I think Dallas will be able to work out a deal with Hamlin without resorting to the franchise tag. If the Cowboys plan is to keep Hamlin for the next 3 or 4 years then get a deal done.

I agree with this. I think we get a deal done with Hamlin.

Resigning Hamlin has to be a priority. The franchise tag is one tool in the box to use, but realistically, it's not as if this team is in salary cap trouble. Re-signing both Hamlin and Barber to long term contracts is important to the success of this team. I'd like to bring Flozell back too, if for nothing else the consistency on the offensive line (which was one of the strengths of the team this year).

Bring them all back, I say! :)
