What about Tank at DE on occasion?

Hey guys, just a quick thought - not even sure if it works or makes much sense. But obviously Tank was brought in here to backup Ratliff and play NT. However, what do you guys think about occassionally putting Tank at DE while ratliff is in at NT - replacing spears or canty. Would he be able to play a 3-4 DE? Seems like he has the ideal size of a 3-4 DE.

Why not he's the same size as Spears and more active and stronger

He may be a better 3-4 DE than NT. But phillips appears to be able to slant and stunt Ratliff.

Problem comes if we fall behind and teams try and jam it down our throat.

Frankly I was thinking the same thing that maybe we could use him at both DE & NT. He could eventually become a good backup for Ratliff but also a good backup or starter in the DE rotation since we not seemingly getting much out of Spears.

I like the fact we signed him to a 2 year minimum deal. If he's not a problem and works hard, maybe next year he could be a valuable DE if Spears not getting the job done.

The point of bringing him in is to keep the NTs fresh. Playing him at both would defeat that purpose and there are plenty of DEs to rotate already.

Spears loves this scheme and has promised all Zoners that he will thrive under Coach Phillips......

Can anyone out play Spears enough to justify benching our #1 pick? :banghead:

Part of Wade's philosophy is to change according to what he has available. I would be shocked not to see him play at the DE position at times.

at this point, anyone is better than Spears and Can't. I hope Phillips is true to his word about putting the best players on the field, no matter where they line up.

if nothing else... knowing that the TANK is rolling into town in a few weeks SHOULD light a fire under Spears/Canty's respective rear ends....

let's hope so anyway.

I doubt he plays any DE

he'll play NT in the base and some DT in the nickel defense

..he'll be making about 1/10th what we are paying Spears for about zero production.

Spear could hit the street next year if he doesn't shake that booty and become the player a #1 pick should.

Tank could replace him.

It's definitely a possibility you can't rule out. Given the time, he won't have any problem beating out any of our starting 3 D-lineman. The biggest question would be where we needed him the most.

All I know is, when we go into a nickel or dime defense, I want Tank/Ratliff/Ware and Ellis/Spencer rushing the QB.
