Wanting to get more knowledge on this from you all.

1. Teams can see where the market value is by bidding on him?

2. We have the right to refuse it, if we do we AREN'T paying him more than Lamb?

3. If we tag him, we tag him at market value or at the 28 million??

4. Does it have to be (2) 1st round picks we'd receive, could we accept something a little less than that to facilitate a GOOD trade compensation for him??

5. We have 5 days to match any offer??

If PIckens signs the tag he can negotiate with any team. If he signs a contract with another team Dallas has the opportunity to match. If Dallas declines to match they get compensated 2 first round picks. If Pickens does not sign with another team he essentially has a one-year deal with Dallas for $28 million.

Pickens has the option to sit out the year and get nothing and become a free agent next year.

Pickens has the option to wait until the last minute to sign the deal and get a prorated amount of that $28 million, play however many games are left and be a free agent again next year.

He could also be retagged at 120% IIRC from the Bell situation if he were to sit out an entire year lol.

Question, it makes sense, but I thought players could talk with other teams even without signing the deal. Or was it officially their agent can't talk about offers, but probably do anyways.

Yes. Pickens can be tagged again next year either way (unless he signs a contract and Dallas doesn't match)

Pickens cannot talk to any other team until he signs the tag.

PS. I like the move. It keeps Dallas from negotiating against themselves.

Yes, and the Cowboys can also accept less than two first-round picks, be it one 1st; a 2nd and 3rd, whatever.

I dont like it at all. NET are not used in todays NFL. Only if you want ro get rid of a player because youdont want him on your team. NET are usually seen as an (little) affront against the player.

I get it the two dumbos have no clue about contract negotiation or player evaluation. So they think hey lets be smart and let others set the market. I doubt anybody will hand them 2 firsts for Pickens though.

But lets see. Maybe i am wrong.

He can be retagged at 120% next year regardless and then 140% of that 120% the following year.

We could accept less in a trade.
I don’t think Jerry would take much less. Maybe a one and two. Don’t see him taking just a one. But I also think Pickens would like to be in Dallas. It’s great for his career. He’s gonna get a little of targets

I think using NET in this case is a smart move.

Either Pickens plays this year at 28 million— a number they can live with— or they get 2 firsts which is a good return on the investment of a third round pick.

Either way— Dallas wins.

The only possible downside is if Pickens refuses to sign the tag and holds out until week 10 and then plays for a much smaller figure.

But if he does that— he is literally torching his own money which makes no sense.

I have no problem with this move, especially if they are still looking to sign him long term in good faith. It gives both the player and the team flexibility and options if a deal can’t be reached

It's not a bad thing if no one signs Pickens to an offer sheet. Pickens then plays for the Cowboys for less than the exclusive tag and Dallas can negotiate a long term deal from there. Two ones is not bad if someone actually offers Pickens a contract, though.

Tagging him with the non-exclusive option was the right thing to do. Glad to see it, couldn't let him walk for zero compensation.

Gotcha thanks so much

See that makes things interesting as well, I thought it was set at only a team giving two firsts

Hell no he would be on drugs to just take one pick, milk it for what you can at least a 1st and another pick, hell then you use the first to get mad max lol, you have two more picks to use in the first round as well

Don't ever see that happening, maybe if he didn't have the small amount of baggage. The only wr to get that now would be the kid from Seattle JSN
