What are the ramifications of the Non Exclusive Tag for Pickens?

Teams can discuss a deal and if he agrees to one that team can notify the Cowboys prior to making a formal offer and ask what it will take in trade. If they don’t want to give up two firsts the Cowboys are free to agree to take less than that.
I think this is the issue to this whole situation. I don't anticipate a formal offer with two 1sts being the compensation if the deal is not matched. Pickens agent and another team will agree on a long term deal, but only if Dallas plays ball on a trade.

He'll have someone or multiple teams willing to pay him $30-$35M and his agent will go back to Jerry with that info. He'll say this is Pickens market value, you got him for a 3rd, sign him long term or trade him for a 1st or a 2nd. If Jerry balks at that, now you have a pissed off Pickens, with proof he could get more than $28-$30M and he feels we're keeping him from market value. Now, he's a locker room distraction and a problem. At this point you have to decide if you want the distraction or way less compensation.

I hated this idea. If he's gone, I doubt two 1sts are coming back.

The team who signs Pickens to an offer would have to give up their next two first round picks whenever they might be if Dallas declines to match. I don't know what year the draft picks start, though, in general. I would imagine the picks woold start in 2027 regardless.
I'm pretty sure it would be 26 & 27

Pickens DOES NOT have to sign the tag to negotiate with other teams. On March 11 he’s not under contract to the Cowboys and is free to talk to anyone he feels like.

Right. He can negotiate immediately but he has to sign to be traded.

That is the downside of the tag for the team. Players understand the team is exercising their rights in the CBA. Pickens will exercise his, as well.

I don't get the argument that tying up something like $28 mill by tagging him is not a problem.

I read that the Cowboys can 'easily' free up loads of $$'s by adjusting existing contracts. OK, and other teams can't? Other teams that, on paper at least, have more favorable cap situations?

Especially since the Cowboys hardly rank near the top of the league when it comes to effectively manipulating the cap.
You’re actually wrong the on bolded part. There’s been an article floating around Twitter last couple weeks that has all 32 teams ranked by how much cap space they could create this offseason. The Cowboys are #1, we can create more cap space than all 31 other teams because of the way we structured our contracts. So literally 0 excuses not to sign players.

so basically we're doing nothing, what about the increase in total cap, didn't that help a little???
No. They need to do a lot more. They most likely cut a few more players freeing up some cap space and restructure our DT's.

However, they really need to get GP signed or traded. $28M this year will hurt. Plus we don't want to sign him after Puka and JSN.

'Can' create and 'will' create are two different things. Plus, now you have $28 mill sitting in limbo, meaning, unless a contract is reached with Pickens before free agency starts, that's money that can't be spent on free agents. Plus, are we talking an additional $7 mill for Aubrey on a tag? That's an additional $35 mill unavailable to you during free agency.

Yeah, I'm terrified Jerry's just going to run it back w/ Pickens and a couple of draft picks.
