What are we saving screens for?

Like you said, they ran screens this year. That's why it's more mind boggling why they didn't run it as much as they should have on Monday night.

It's not like they haven't practiced it and used it.

Maybe part of the reason was while Washington was giving Blitz look on damn near every play they were not bringing the blitz every play, they drop out into coverage some of the hot reads and screens become easy pickings. Bottom line Dallas failed to execute in picking up the blitz, we have in other games and have made plays. We failed to do so in this game.

If you read Sturms article, Washington blitzed 100% of the time on 3rd down and we didn't pick it up once. It's obvious what our offense was trying to do wasn't working.

That is why it's mind boggling that they didn't even try something different. Like a screen, or draw, slant, rub route, etc..

That's been a staple of Garrett's tenure. We are not good at in-game adjustments. We try to force our gameplan and if it doesn't work, we are pretty much screwed.

Yet Dallas still converted 41% which is league avg, not as well as we have done but then Dallas 3rd down conversions lead the league so to say we did not pick them up once? Not true. if that was the case we would not have converted the ones we did. lol

Bottom line Dallas did not do a good job of picking up guys and that includes Romo who at times held on to long.

Well at least he gets some blame, for the last 6 wins he was not given any credit, he was just standing on the sidelines. lol

I dont know if the coaching staff is or is not good at in game adjustments - but one thing we saw is that when weedon came into the game, what they tried worked well.

so either they made adjustments that worked, or they didnt make adjustments and weedon was able to execute the same plays that romo was not -

im thinking that when weedon was in there they did some more QB friendly type plays. So why didnt they do that for romo ?

or maybe they did and we cant tell because he was holding the ball too long so we didnt get to see what everyone else was doing as the camera stayed on romo.

Or maybe they give Romo the options to do different things and he continued to choose to try and beat them with more downfield attempts rather than trying the underneath stuff ?

its really hard to tell because all we see is romo holding the ball and then getting sacked - so people assume no one is getting open or assume the coaches are calling pass plays that dont work against that blitz but without being able to see the entire field who knows ?

It's pure stupidity why we don't do them more and why we only did it once when Weeden was in there. Washington had their way with us and it looked like screen passes weren't even an option when Romo was in there. They pretty much told us they were going to blitz and to try and stop them and we had no answer at all. Pathetic! I hope they learn how to do screens this week in practice because Arizona is the #1 blitzing team.

Well said indeed.

if u look at manning imo...he is not that good as far as ability in the pocket he just has the best plays drawn up for any defense all he does is play ball..i think Romo just gets ahead of himself s

No thats not tru well the last part i dont assume anything i saw it....on the romo sack where he got hurt why was there no one running across the field?..because romo called it that way i dont think so .... someone didnt know the right route and i keep asuming its on Measley that my new hate name for him. i feel bad though cuz i think he just had a little one, if thats tru thought ice up son grow some

What's strange is the few times they have run screens, they've gotten pretty good yardage. May want to use it a little more. They certainly have the personnel to do it at RB and OL.

I remember Dallas running two screens this year so far- one to Murray against Seattle and one to Joseph Randle against the Giants.

Both came on 3rd and very long; both came up just short.

I think they were 3rd and longer than 10 yards to go.

Would like to see some on 3rd and shorter than 10. Or on. 1st down.

I thought Murray had a long gainer vs Washington on a screen. Dunbar had one earlier in the year at home I think vs NO for like 20 yds.

You guys should watch Tony Dorsett run the screen. That was awesome and deadly.

I think this totally a Romo thing . As soon as Weeden was in they ran the screen. I just think Tony is not comfortable with them. Maybe his height is the issue? He may not like trying to throw over guys 6 inches taller than him as he is moving backwards, he needs lanes and those are't there on a screen. I don't know but I am certain it is Romo not the coaches on this one

On the last series of downs in regulation romo hit three passes in a row all against that blitz. One was the third down conversion that twill wrestled away from a defender, the next two were quick hitters that in total gained 9.99 yds. The boys got a terrible spot on the second down play which lead to third and inches and the intentional grounding call. These two quick passes were the only two I remember all nite.

The screen would stll work on a 2-3 man blitz with some strategic placing of te and wr its fairly easy to run a well thought out screen

Ok....i have been thinking about this since the game....I tell myself, We have one of the better olines in football? Right? So then why cant we throw screen passes?? Are we saving them? Or, do we just not run them welll, and if not, why not?? I Honestly believe that we would have won that game on the last drive had we just said look lets run this offense out of the screen and then audible out of it if you see anything and at that audible to a run. Or am i missing something and we run screens all this time?

What the hell is a screen pass?............................................signed, Dallas Cowboys Offensive Coaching Staff.

Screens can work never said they didn't but with the speed of defense these days screens can back fire just as quick. Dallas hit some big plays on Washington in the running game and with swing passes out to Murray. In the end Dallas has faced blitz before and were able to pick it up and make plays in this game they failed to do so and it cost them. We could sit there all day and say well if you run this play things will work but the game was not about making 1 play it was inconsistency of blitz pickups all around quality ball and they did not do that
