What are your feelings on Will McClay?

Yup , every team is hit or miss….its just the way it is when players go from college to nfl, even top prospects bust.
Yup and our issue is we draft fair, but we stop short of going the extra step in free agency.

I think Will McClay’s role and power within this organization is overrated. He is an advisor not a decision maker.

It appears to me that he is a glorified scout who gives the FO information for the draft, free agency and trades. He listens to what the Jones boys and coaches say they want, provides information on who is in the draft, available in FA, or who might be available in a trade.

There are some fans here who believe McClay is the defacto GM. Not true. He is a very highly paid scout who gives the FO information and choices about players. His “power” is very limited.
Not so sure sometimes. Maybe it all depends on the situation.

The ruse is this, that big and little enos are sitting in draft war rooms often, helping build a board and watching film. Please people! Lol. Use common sense. Our scouting dept needs an overhaul probably. Mcclay is just fair to middling. Make no mistake, he's calling the final shots on most of the football decisions. 200 year old Jerry isn't. He's nothing more than a gimmick now, from our past. To distract, and entertainment us. Can't take anything he says seriously. It's because he's not running everything like you think. It's Stephen, Mcclay and our current HC, with input from Jerry and Jerry jr.

Are his drafts as good as they're made out to be? I think he was once loved by a lot of fans or liked for better words. Now, I'm not sure how fans feel about him. Our drafts have been questionable, some players have worked out for us, and some haven't at all. He's going to be here for a while, and may even be our GM if Jerry ever leaves.

So I ask you, how do you feel about him going forward, are you ready to see him go, is he overrated, or you like the job he's doing? Please give your thoughts
His drafts have failed miserably over the past four or five years. All they do is pick offensive linemen in the first round. The second round has been a total disaster. We have teams like the Rams that were in cap hell for many years and without a first-round pick for ages. Yet here they are, favorites to go to the Super Bowl.

Flournoy has been a bright spot. Diamond in the rough

McClay can only do what Jerry Dumbo GM Jones lets him do.

If Will McClay was a full time, full authority, full accountability, full responsibility with reward or performance GM, there is no doubt in my mind the Dallas Cowboys would have gone to 5-7 Super Bowls during the last 24 years and not become the Arlington Jonesboys.

He was a DB at Rice, former DC, HC, built teams successfully in multi football leagues, and went from scout to VP of Player Personnel in the NFL despite Jerry Dumbo GM Jones.

All you have to do is look at his success finding and drafting DBs, the number of Pro Bowl players he gave Jerry Dumbo GM Jones, and coaches.

While Campo the Clown had the Dallas Cowboys doing 5-11 three-peat he built the Dallas Desparados into a consistent championship contender. He kept Jerry Dumbo GM Jones from drafting Johnny Manziel and selected Zach Martin. He took control of the conflict in the draft room to select Travis Fredrick.

Jerry Jones uses McClay's draft board to select the players. Nothing is wrong with the board but something is wrong with Jerry Dumbo GM Jones having no experience in NFL player personnel selecting players.

well said, totally agree

As others have said, it's difficult to tell where responsibility begins and ends in Jerry World. But I'll take a guess.

Generally speaking, Cowboys draft picks for the past 10 years have fell into one of two categories:
  • Gambles on supreme athletes with warts
  • Using the draft as free agency and reaching for positions of need
My bet is that #1 happens when McClay wins out, and #2 happens when Jerry wins out.

His draft board has given you premium pick gems like Mazi Smith, Taco Charlton, Trysten Hill, Kelvin Joseph, Luke Schoonmaker, Damone Clark, Nashon Wright, Chaz Green, and many more.

Nashon Wright and Damone Clark are on playoff teams this season. Taco Charlton was on the Chiefs AFC Championship team.

Again it is not the players it is your dumbo GM Jerry Jones.

Its called, can't cancel out ALL the noise when playing for THE DALLAS cowboys.

Once they arrive on a new team, they don't get no 10 mins of fame so they are more focused.

Never understood why he is held in such high regard by some. Kind of feel like he is an average talent evaluator…has had some hits and misses, much like any other scout. If he does one thing well I think it is unearthing UDFAs.
I also give him his props for putting up with Stephen and Jerry; he probably keeps those two from looking really stupid on draft day.

Overrated. He's missed on a lot more players the last few seasons than he did when he started earning his initial reputation. Unfortunately we have ownership that over-values the best of times in hopes they are coming right back at any moment.

He has picked up a few good free agents, but he has not done well in the first 3 rounds overall. Taco Charlton over TJ Watt, Jerry probably saw this as an opportunity to sell more Tacos. Too many times we have heard that they picked up a player in the 2nd or 3rd round that they had a first round grade on (most due to injuries) That said, how much say does McClay actually have?

Is everybody this delusional ,you have blinders on? you think that somehow Charlton or Clark are making any kind of impact whatsoever No they didn't ,no they're not.

Sure Wright did a good job being an opportunist, but he stopped with the Vikings first, they also cut him, so he left the Cowboys went to the Vikings, both teams rejected him, somehow he lands with the Bears and he is a slightly better player but the last game he played he got lit up like a Christmas tree, He can't cover as well as people think he can, He's at best a 3rd or 4th option at corner and yes he was around the ball It was opportunistic, we get it, he made some plays, but if you look at a lot of his games and break it down ask the people in Chicago that watch every single game & every single snap, the man gives up way too many plays...

But before you anoint all these players somehow found themselves with other teams you might want to use some realistic terms you just drop their names as if they are superstars now on the teams and at the Cowboys lost out on all these big-time players...

And by the way ,

many of these teams have players getting in trouble, I mean are you saying Andy Reid and that coaching staff are not focused and together as an organization winning all these Super Bowls and yet they got players getting in trouble constantly, they have more players getting in trouble with the Chiefs ,than anywhere else, but if we can go to every team you're going to find players that can't control themselves, they get penalties, they get arrested, they get beat they late to meetings, they fall asleep in meetings ,all the above, a

every team stop with the nonsense that is just the Cowboys...

By the way includes Tom Landry in the old regime somehow you forgot all those players who were getting in trouble and never got cut big time players the Bmocs they did what they want they do at every stop at every team the 90s Jimmy Johnson the White House the stuff that we know about that's just small stuff can you imagine if there was TMZ and social media back then following these guys around with cameras...

I mean we had Lawrence Taylor playing for Bill Parcells going out the night before and getting coked up drunk sometimes during the game they were doing drugs just like on Tom Landry's team Hollywood Henderson all these other guys give it a break there's no more focus on other teams you just think that because you're not hearing every story and watching every play of every game and being just deep following your teams..
