For me, one of the characteristics I think is important, or at least more important than I realized last year, is the age of the coach.
I don't mean to discriminate, but after listening to BP the last couple of years, you really do better appreciate the pressure, work hours, year-round focus this job requires.
I'm not saying someone who is "older" can't get the job done, but I suppose all things being equal, someone who is younger and can stick around for atleast 4-6 years is preferable.
Obviously, the other characteristic I would look for is previous success, either as a college and/or NFL HC, or a DC or OC in the NFL.
What other characteritics are important?
