How are Cowboys feeling about the addition of Greg Hardy?

After it was reported back in April that Greg Hardy got into an argument with defensive tackle Davon Coleman during a Valley Ranch workout, some probably wondered if similar reports would continue to surface throughout the offseason.
Signing Hardy to a one-year deal in March was already a controversial decision considering the off-field concerns. The 2013 Pro Bowler iscurrently appealing a 10-game suspensionfor conduct detrimental to the league.

But the reviews have all been positive.

Hardy hasn’t been made available to media members since joining the Cowboys, although he did speak briefly at the team’s annual golf outing.

To get a better idea of the impression he’s made on his new team, here’s a roundup of what Cowboys players, coaches and the front office have recently said about Hardy.

Rookie defensive end Randy Gregory: “He’s probably the hardest working one on the D-line. He does a good job as far as setting the tempo for us.”

Veteran defensive end Jeremy Mincey: “He’s looking great. He’s working hard. A lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm. Proud of the kid. He’s an animal. He’s going to give it his all. He’s going to work hard. He’s got a lot to prove. I’m glad that he’s approaching his opportunity with the Cowboys the right way. … Everybody likes him here. So far, so good. He’s doing a good job.”

Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten: “I’ve been really pleased with how he’s approached it and how he goes to work and what kind of teammate he’s been. The day he got suspended, the next day he was in there working out, so I think that’s kind of the mentality he has, what kind of work ethic and what he’s trying to prove here in Dallas. The guy works his tail off.”

Veteran cornerback Brandon Carr: “I love him. He’s a guy that comes to work every day. He gives it his all every single day. He’s trying to work to be the best. That’s all you can ask for. I’m happy to have him on our team.”

Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli: “I don’t go much by the words. I just watch guys work. His work habits, I just think they’re special. He comes out here and he goes to work and you can see the passion in every rep he does. … And I just think he’s being himself. The best way to make an impression is just be yourself, but be the best of who you are. And I think he’s doing that.”

Head coach Jason Garrett: “He’s done an excellent job. … He wanted to get here as quickly as he could to show his teammates what he’s all about. And I think if you’ve asked any guy who has had the opportunity to work with him or work against him up to this point, he brings it. He brings it every day. That’s what we saw, and that’s what we heard about him before we signed him.”

Honestly, nobody's gonna throw him under the bus in the media. Players rarely say a bad thing about each other, especially team mates.
I'm not saying he's not welcome or wanted on the team but never trust the media.

While you shouldn't expect to hear bad things, they likely aren't going out of their way to shower him with the kinds of praise he's receiving. It's been pretty unanimous how high his work ethic and motor are, particularly from the defensive players and coaching staff. He's an intense guy and we can only hope his practice habits wear off on the rest of the defense.

Hopefully he can become the Michael Irvin of the defense.

I really do believe this guy has gotten a pretty raw deal from the NFL, the media, the law and the public. He is eccentric and people are going to be naturally distrustful of him which really hurts his reputation.

He seems to be mentally tough which is a huge plus and I look forward to him coming out and leading a resurgent Cowboys team. The Panthers defense and the whole team seemed to take a huge step back with him out for the year. Hopefully his suspension gets reduced down to something more reasonable (4-6 game fine, 2 game suspension) and gets back to playing football ASAP.

Players tend to learn it's not in their best interest or the team's best interest to criticize teammates openly.

You have guys who cheat on their wives, guys who are whoremongers, guys who do drugs, take steroids, etc. on a team. If you start playing morality police or tattletale, you're just going to make it difficult for yourself.

The locker room really isn't the environment for that. So I don't see why guys would say anything to Hardy about his domestic abuse situation. I had no concerns about how Hardy would get along with teammates regarding his issue.

But if the player was a problem then they wouldn't be heaping so much praise on him as the Cowboys are doing concerning Hardy.

But the problem Hardy faces isn't on the field. So it's understandable that they heap praise on him based on what he's doing in practice and the locker room.

This doesn't surprise me at all.

I'm very pleased to hear this. While teammates won't throw him under the bus, every single one of them is saying that he's an incredibly hard worker.

That's not choreography or filler; that's real.

They may not be totally enamored with everything he says and does privately but as far as his work ethic and performance on the field, they seem extremely pleased up to this point in time. Jason Witten's comments offer an excellent idea what someone with extremely high standards thinks of Hardy's presence on the team. He has been praising him generously for his work ethic and his leadership ever since his arrival.

There is a difference in not saying something bad about someone and going out of your way to praise their work ethic.

If he gives this Defense some swagger, then sign the man for the next 5 years.

Swagger makes a below average player play like he's average.

It makes a good player play like he's great.

It makes Maxdallasfan's hand clapping turn into chest thumping.

There's a big difference between saying nothing or saying "no comment" or saying something brief but positive vs saying something effusively positive (this stuff).

It's clear these guys like what he brings so far.

He has a positive work ethic and pushes others to have one also. Makes them better and stronger and more fit, so hopefully less nagging injuries, like we still had last year. but should cut down on major injuries, like last year compared to the previous 2 years.
Then this translates onto the field. Creates more competition in TC, and then better play in real games.

If anything, even if the 10 games holds up. He will be there in support in some way, still pushing them to be better. Now I don't know if he can be at practices or workouts while suspended, but doesn't mean he can't keep in touch with the players. At least he can be a big influence in TC until his return later in the season.

Not a fan of Hardy but I am glad he is working hard. I have never doubted his ability on the field.

That's fine. I'm just saying that there's a difference between commenting about a player and what he does on field and commenting about a player's off-field issues. Those are two separate issues, and we shouldn't (I'm not saying you're doing this, just speaking in general) interpret their comments to mean they believe Hardy is innocent of domestic abuse.

I merely read them as comments about what an example he is in terms of the team.
