I agree X the real issue is when they really contribute to the team defense vs being a placeholder. To be clear it is normal for the third year to really show their talent. IMO

I have bashed Taco pretty hard and I believe rightly so. He was over drafted and I am sticking by that stance. He was too much of a project for his draft position.

Having said that I always believed that Taco would be an above average run defender because of his size. I think this is the year that he will pick it up in run defense.

As for pass rushing ability, I think Taco is lacking but if he played every down that Tank would have he will get 6-9 sacks which about what we have been getting out of Tank for most of his career.

I disagree. You can get developmental players just like Taco in the 3rd round.

Taco was a fringe 1st round prospect according to most people that cover the draft. Similar draft status to LVE.

LVE hit fast, Taco did not.

Taco was drafted right in the range he was slated.

I’d be tickled if taco could get 6-9 sacks
I didn’t like the pick immediately because I felt it was a need pick not best player. His talent is what it is but when healthy he wasn’t active for a reason. That’s what really concerns me. Does he have the will to be a good player?
I never heard exactly what the issue was but if the can get him motivated to be the best he can be, even if it’s a decent run stopper and 6-8 sacks I can live with it and he can help the team

    He was a reach.

That is the bad part with how the Taco story is playing out, he has up to this point played like a third rd selection. I do not think anyone thought he was going to be Randy Gregory, Demarcus Ware, or Dlaw, maybe more in the vein of Crawford, I am not a cheerleader for Taco just realizing this is what a missed pick looks like after two years, the third year removes any doubts.

Pretty much everyone that covers the draft would disagree with you.

Any player that doesn't develop like you hope do you just consider a reach?

Project more than a reach there was slim pickens at that point in the first rd I believe the other choice for many on the zone was TJ Watt. TJ has had a better career but is not considered elite more of a average guy late first rd.

I don't even think project...he had a solid final season at a ranked university and was top 10 in his class in pass rush productivity. Rico was a project. Someone who jumped out of the gym at the combine with no production is a project.

You can call him a disappointment thus far if you'd like, but he wasn't a reach and I don't really think he was a project either.

I respect your opinion but will have to respectfully disagree on both the reach and the project.

Your are a project if you are not a finished project, and Taco I agree had just started to scratch the surface of his talent in his senior year.

I don't think you can. Maybe you can find a someone that ultimately will be a better player but they won't have his measurables unless they come with some pretty significant baggage.

That’s literally every player in the draft.

    Exactly.

Usually the further down the draft you go the more “development” the player needs and the less likely they are to have NFL measurables and athleticism.

Yes you finally noticed, guys like Martin, Frederick, Tyron, LVE, are the exceptions we have won the lottery for so long we have lost perspective.

We’ve been rock solid in the 1st - but every one of those players had weaknesses in their scouting report.

Exactly it is not a science and their is no crystal ball that can tell you if you have a Zak Martin or a Bobby Carpenter the cowboys have been riding a winning streak for a long time, it is not normal to hit on this many great players and the offensive/defensive solutions so many people profess to know are seldom binary choices. We were long overdue for a Taco type pick IMO as we regress to the mean. I am sure quantum computing will clear a lot of choices up in the future but in the early 2000's this is how it is done.
