What do we do at DT?

If there's any inclination to acquire Marvin Austin, we'd better get on the stick in a hurry. He's already visited with Detroit and it's been reported he's liable to sign with them by the end of this week. Not much time to dilly-dally.

He was working out with Seahawks yesterday...

I understand old vets with skins on the wall and a mountain of money like Seymore, Moore or Waters not rushing back to play until they get the right number. Okoye is 26 years old and has had a stinker of a career (and a reputation for having a questionable love for the game). If he's not with a team it's because either he sucks so bad no one wants him, or he's not very enthusiastic about continuing his NFL career. Nothing like a 280 lbs. defensive tackle with no motor.

Dont worry about it Jerry said the dline was one of the strengths of the team, so they will be fine.

pendelton is a guy you might could actually get in her and dress sunday. was with us in camp and atleast be some depth to rotate in to rest some guys. but this is a bad place to have an injury because that means you have to keep two roster spots open for a few weeks at just the dt spot waiting on players to get healthy. i think i would bring him in and cut arkin, or killer today. then monday look and see if there is a better option that you can sign who would agree to a non guranteed contract. a guy like seymour won't agree to it so thats not a real option. once you get your guys healthy if you want you could bring back the oline guy. i don't think either would get signed by another team

Pendelton is about the only guy you could resign today who could realistically help us against the Giants

Anyone else wouldn’t know enough of the system (or his team-mates) by Sunday to be of any help.

The only problem is that Pendelton is more of a “one” technique than a “three” which is what Bass gives us.

BTW. Killer has already been cut.

I'm wondering is they don't cut Wilbur or Arkin to sign a young defensive tackle to help get them through week one and then maybe look at a vet like Amobe Okoye after Sunday night's game?

That's what I would do anyway.

This makes a lot of sense to me, depending on what he's asking. He's youngish, knows the DL responsibilities. I'm already ready to move on from Wilber if we need his spot.

I still think these coaches like our DTs, if they were healthy, btw. There were reasonable moves to be made in the offseason if they were interested in doing anything, and trading Lissemore--even with the scheme change--tells me they like their young guys. I'm bummed about getting Bass dinged, because I do like his play. He's got to demonstrate that he can stay on the field, though.

EDIT: Oh.

@doomsdayD77: @BryanBroaddus any thought of amobi okoye from team?” There is something not right there with DL coach.

Pendleton works for me in a pinch, too. At least we've got some options.

Honestly I thought Pendleton had a chance to mak the team anyway. He played well in the preseason.

Whoa.

Hadn't heard that before, but it would explain a few things.

Thanks for posting it.

It had actually crossed my mind previously, since there were a lot of Bears defenders available in FA, and we hadn't shown any interest in any of them. Okoye seemed to make the best sense, though, because he's relatively young, was a high pick, and had familiarity with the defense and played a position of relative need for us given the transition we were making. The fact that we hadn't heard even any rumors might have been a red flag.

Still, if we're in need of depth, and he's sitting there, it's a different story. Either Rod really does have an issue, or we like our scrap-heap guys better than people realize.

Yes, cut Wilber and sign someone who might do something. Wilber showed nothing last year or in pre-season this year-get rid of him.

Garrett says no Pendleton and we roll with Rayford. This mess is the result of such poor planning. Post cuts, we set a practice squad that does not include a DT and we sign/trade for 2 DE's, but no DTs. Knowing that Rat is out 6 weeks. Even without the Bass injury, how do you not have some contingency plans when your only healthy DTs are Hatcher + 3 street free agents?

Do we roll into the Giants game with one backup and hope the guy from the Colts can play the position for a series?

Or do we cut the 53rd guy on the roster (Arkin/Weems?) and sign a DT from another teams practice squad?

This may have been said and for some this will be preaching to the choir, but in the 4-3 you can get by with sliding a DE to DT, provided you are sliding him to the 3 tech and preferably in 3rd and long situations. It's not ideal, particularly in run situations, but if all you are trying to do is spell the starter, you can get by working it that way.

I've shaked my head everytime I've seen Okoye's name on this board the last few months. In football circles, he has a bad rep like you said. You don't want him here.

Keeping 4 DTs on a 53 is pretty standard in a 4-3, particularly when you're expecting an addition later in the year from a guy coming back from injury. There is no "contingency plan" for getting decimated on a particular unit. Ozzie Newsome didn't have a "contingency plan" for all of his offensive skill players getting hurt, is he a dumb GM? We could have kept Pendleton on the 53, or we could sign him tommorrow since he's still out on the streets. It made no difference. We could add some DL tommorrow the practice squad tommorrow, if it's really that big of a deal to you. It accomplishes nothing. Keeping numbers at a position accomplishes nothing when those numbers aren't composed of viable football players.
