What do we do at DT?

Garrett says no Pendleton and we roll with Rayford. This mess is the result of such poor planning. Post cuts, we set a practice squad that does not include a DT and we sign/trade for 2 DE's, but no DTs. Knowing that Rat is out 6 weeks. Even without the Bass injury, how do you not have some contingency plans when your only healthy DTs are Hatcher + 3 street free agents?

how many dt's should we carry. maybe 10? we carried 4 healthy and one on the pup. i don't think there are many teams in the nfl carrying anymore than that. if only we had a crystal ball to know we would have another injury

Keeping 4 DTs on a 53 is pretty standard in a 4-3, particularly when you're expecting an addition later in the year from a guy coming back from injury. There is no "contingency plan" for getting decimated on a particular unit. Ozzie Newsome didn't have a "contingency plan" for all of his offensive skill players getting hurt, is he a dumb GM? We could have kept Pendleton on the 53, or we could sign him tommorrow since he's still out on the streets. It made no difference. We could add some DL tommorrow the practice squad tommorrow, if it's really that big of a deal to you. It accomplishes nothing. Keeping numbers at a position accomplishes nothing when those numbers aren't composed of viable football players.

I disagree. Most 4-3 teams carry 10 DLs, 5 DTs. Look at the Giants, : Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka, Damontre Moore,Linval Joseph, Cullen Jenkins, Shaun Rogers, Johnathan Hankins, Mike Patterson, Justin Trattou.

Since I don't have enough posts yet to like a post, consider this a "Like" from me.

Look at the other teams playing the Tampa 4-3 or variations of the Tampa 4-3. The Bears are only keeping 4 DTs. The Seahwaks are only keeping 4 DTs. The Jaguars are only only keeping 4 DTs. If you want to look at Wide 9 4-3s, the Lioins are only keeping 4 DTs. The Rams are only keeping 4 DTs. And the Cowboys, unlike those teams, have a starting caliber DT that is coming off of PUP by Week 6.

Yes, it makes sense the Giants might decide to be an anomaly and go long at DT considering their unique situation where they are depending on players with so much age in Jenkins, Rogers and Patterson. Not to mention the huge, scary red flags involved with rostering Rogers and Patterson, who have had recent issues with blood clots and brain aneurysms.

So they bring back DT Jerome Long. They knew it would be easy enough to resign a player so they didn't have him on the original 53. So much for the poor planning criticism.

Amazing that we still have people on the Floyd bandwagon because we didn't take him at #18. Even the Viking fans aren't thrilled with the guy. Seems to be injuried a bit with the knee but expected to start Sunday because other 2 guys at the position may be out for the game.

Supposedly Stephen Jones is still trying to work a trade but for who and for what is an unknown. Lets hope it is for a DT since Bass is out 2 to 4 weeks.

We can agree to disagree but by my review of rosters (positions were cut and pasted) NYG, Seattle, Tampa, Minnesota, Tennessee all kept 5 DTs (see below). My point is that, knowing that Rat was a big question mark all off-season, when you are switching to a 4-3 front you have to invest more in DTs in both quality and quantity.

Seattle kept 5 DTs:

Tampa of the Tampa 4-3 kept 5 DTs:

Minnesota kept 5 DTs:

Tennessee kept 5 DTs:

Hopefully that is posted in the Dallas locker room.

Beatty's was taken out of context. It is the injured JPP who is talking more noise:

“Going against Will Beatty gets me better [because] it’s game mode every day,” Pierre-Paul said after practice Wednesday. “If he can stick with me, he can probably stick with anybody. Oh yeah, he definitely can stick with DeMarcus (Ware),” Pierre-Paul said. “No doubt about it.”

72 Michael Bennett and 97 Karl Klug are DEs and not DT.

Yep. And Kevin Williams and Sharrif Floyd were both dinged early, which helped Baker make it off the practice squad when MIN went deep at DL.

Kinda what we should have done with Crawford out for the year Ratliff being "dinged early"

Not like that, obviously. Crawford was lost for the year and replaced entirely on the roster. And just because one team goes long at a position when they've got injuries and a guy they like on the PS, doesn't mean all of them do.

And what are you upset about, in particular, with what Dallas did? They and jockied a couple roster cuts into picks they then traded for one DL they apparently really liked. IRd a DT who got hurt in practice this week, and then replaced him with another camp body they liked from the street. I'd say that's a pretty effective use of their roster and PS spaces, and an example of the team guessing right as to whom to keep and whom to cut. We're lucky we had a lot of guys in camp who played well enough to get consideration for the final 53.

I know the second-guessing-after-every-injury game is really fun for some of you, but isn't even that game supposed to follow logical rules of some sort? Is it really as easy as flailing out over every single injury after the fact and saying *that's* the exact position where Dallas should have gone long on their roster if they were a well-run team?
