Broddus seems to think Lawrence will stay where he is and Hardy will rotate with Mincey on the opposite side.
It seems a forgone conclusion that Hardy is going to serve at least a couple game suspension for everything last year before getting here. During that time I would imagine DLaw will be playing RDE... so what happens if say he is averaging a sack a game (say 4 sacks in 4 games) and is in full beast mode prior to Hardy getting here. Who would you move over the the left side in that situation?
Mincey will ultimately be the odd man out with limited snaps. We didn't pay Hardy 13 mil to play 30 snaps. He is a very good 3 down DE. And under this scenario, Lawrence is ripping it up so you want him out there as much as possible. So Mincey would be the guy to give either Hardy/Lawrence a rest.
Would be nice to have a problem where you got a guy on the team generating so many sacks that it makes you have to think about what to do with the top DE you just signed to sack the QB coming to play.
would be nice to have that problem. Sadly we do not.
Marinelli's scheme often has the DE's switch and be able to play both sides. In fact, it was a major point of focus for Lovie Smith's defense....have your best pass rusher on the strongside because the RT isn't likely as good at pass pro as the LT. That's why he had Leonard Little at LDE when Lovie was in St. Louis, Adawale Ogunlye there in Chicago and then Julius Peppers at LDE in Chicago.
Marinelli tends to go with a more traditional positioning of the LDE and RDE, but they can play either position.
