If it were me, and it's not, I might go a different way. I mean, I know everybody is thinking AP but if it were me, I think I might seriously consider Evan Mathis. He's not an FA but Philly has been trying to move him for a while now. It's widely speculated that if he is not traded, he will be cut. Nobody is going to trade for him because they think he is going to be cut but I might try and make an offer to Philly for him. It would not be a high pick, something lower but I think I would try it. His cap hit is 6.5 this year, next year it's 7 and that is a pretty good deal for a player of his quality. If we did this, it would shore up the weakest part of our OL and really upgrade us in a big way. I might think about doing that and maybe restructuring him if I did make that move.

This. Philly would make us overpay however if he weren't cut

Not so sure. I mean, I don't know what, if anything, they have been offered but if they are going to have to cut him anyway, they might be more willing to move his contract then we might suspect. I don't honestly know if they would do business with us here. Hard to say.

Since we have some cash again?

It's not that much "cash" when all things are considered. They need over 8M to cover Hardy incentives. They have to sign draft picks and they're adding 3M for McClain. When the season starts they have to cover the practice squad, players on IR/PUP and players 52/53 on the roster.

Since when has Leary been our weak link? The guy is a beast. Even Smith had bad games last year. I'd take a young Leary (I know all about his knee condition) over an old expensive Mathis.

Spencer, two marbles, some jacks, a gummy bear, and some lint, and that's about it.

Why does everyone want to spend every dollar we have? We have the most complete team I can remember prior to the draft. We also have five young studs who will be free agents next year (Dez, Leary, Crawford, McClain, Hardy). I'd rather save some money to resign those guys.

Leary is the weakest link in our OL. I'm surprised this is even a question.

If by weak link you mean not an All Pro like 3 other guys on the line, then sure I agree. But Leary is a very good player. The only reason we should even be considering replacing him is because of his knee issue. He's manhandled some of the best D-linemen in the league and he was undrafted just 2 years ago.

I don't think Leary is a very good player. I think he is better because of the talent around him but I think he could be upgraded.

Fair enough. I just think he's proven himself enough that we shouldn't be looking to immediately replace him. He's a guy who was considered one of the better guards in his draft class but went undrafted due to a serious knee condition. We were ecstatic when we saw he was still available and signed him immediately. He battled with Bearndeau his rookie year and learned the ropes, then won the starting job his second year and played every game for the best O-line in the league, in which span he dominated some of the best D-linemen in the league. They can't all be 1st round picks and future Hall of Famers.

I think that with the moves we have made thus far, investing heavily in the OL, resigning Romo, who has not played an injury free season in two straight now, the fact that we have allowed Murray to leave, the fact that we seemingly will go about our running game with multiple backs instead of one proven power back like Murray, the fact that we have perhaps two, three years with Romo's window for a championship (at best) and the fact that on the OL, we need to still find a swing tackle and depth at Guard, that signing would make sense to me (assuming no medical issues). If you made that signing, there is no doubt that it upgrades the OL. It helps the running game, it provides that much more protection Tony, it allows you to consider Martin at Tackle if needed, it allows you to use Free at LT if needed, it give you solid depth at Guard with Leary and Bern and it's a contract that you are out of in 2 years if you want to be.

You make this move and there is not a Defense in the League who can apply consistent pressure to Tony. It immediately improves, what is already the best run blocking OL in the League. Think about that for a second. What would Tony look like, what kind of numbers could he produce if you could not pressure him? It would mean that every team in the league, would have to be able to score points to beat us because Tony will put up points if you can't pressure him. Teams like Seattle will not be able to beat us without being able to score 30 points. SF, Az, any good team that relies on their defense would now have to become a scoring team. That not only effects this season but it effects how good teams need to change their teams to compete and that effects other teams cap situations going forward. A lot I like about a move like that.

To me, that is a move that would make a lot of sense in a lot of ways. Much more then signing an AP IMO.
