Dez just isn't that good at turning short passes into intermediate/long gains. A lot of excuses are being made for it but my eyes aren't lying to me.

He isn't very decisive after the catch, isn't that quick, and goes down easier than he used to. A 3 yard pass to Dez generally gains 5-6 yards or less nowadays. Cole Beasley, for example, is far better at turning those short passes into solid gains.

Take away Dez's 68-yard bomb vs the Rams and the rest of his day was 5 catches for 21 yards (4.2 yards/catch).

Take away Dez's 37-yard catch in OT vs the Texans and the rest of his day was 8 catches for 48 yards (6.0 yards/catch).

We keep trying to get him the ball on these short passes as if we think he's T.O. in his athletic prime. He's not. Dez is still an awesome WR overall, he's just not awesome at this particular skill.
