What happens if we don't sign any OL in FA?

I'm not freakin out because we haven't signed any FAs but do remain concerned that we haven't signed Colombo or even Gramatica. Dielman, Steinbach & Dockery are probably gone and if we don't sign Davis before he leaves VR, he's probably gone. That leaves us with the need to get a RG & RT. Are their any other OG out their who would be an upgrade over Riveria & at least as good as Colombo?

If the answer to the above question is no, that means we must draft 2 OL in the early rounds and hope they can start asap or that Proctor can step in at RG & McQuistan (unless Adams is moved) starts at RT. Can anyone explain to me how we continue to find ourselves in the same situation season after season as it relates to our OL.

If we can't sign OL who can help the right side of our OL, then we'll have to sign players at our needed positions in FA cause we'll need use our first day picks on OT/OG/WR w/other needs falling to the 2nd day.

Maybe Peek is the DE/OLB we need and if we can him in FA then we don't need address that position in the draft; also a vet NT who can alternate with Ferguson might be found in FA. That leaves us still with need to get competition at FS for Watkins but we also need a CB cause Glenn's 34, Henry 32 & Newman 28; Reeves & Jones don't appear to be good enough to be future starters.

Frankly if we have to turn totally to the draft to upgrade our OL, our offense might be in trouble in 07 cause they won't be able to give Romo enough protection for him to get the job done.

Hope this doesn't sound like I'm in a panic. I don't want Jerry to overspend and put us in a bad cap situation but at least when FA is over we shouldn't have fallen behind the other NFC East teams.

there are a host of OGs still out there, nothing sexy, just solid, workman-like, lunch-pail guys, just getting Columbo back is my main worry right now as he's the best RT on the market IMO

First, Fabini's been a productive starter in the NFL. Everyone was down on him because he was beaten out last training camp by an unknown product in Columbo. Turned out that Columbo was pretty darn good so maybe Fabini's still passable. Carpenter looked good and the only way he even saw the field was thanks to an injury.

Second, there's a lot of linemen that are still available that aren't going to break the bank. Kosier was a disappointing signing to most people here at the time but now given his play and judging by the recent explosion in guard contracts, he looks like one of the best bargains in the NFL.

Third, maybe Rivera comes back healthy. Everyone's writing him off, but Dallas did have a top offense last season with him at guard, finished high in rushing TDs, and were pretty decent in sacks allowed once Romo hit the field.

Lastly, Dallas does have some decent prospects in training, has a lot of picks to address the OL, hoping to find that diamond, and if history is any lesson, free agent acquistions rarely are the integral part of Super Bowl winners.

Look at how teams that have been successful for long periods of time in the salary cap era have done it. Both the Patriots and Steelers seem to eschew building through free agency and let their own free agents walk while concentrating on only signing a few key players. They've figured out the key. Sign less than you let walk and the NFL rewards you with compensatory picks.

Imagine if Dallas signed only a guard, Fabini or a draft pick plays right tackle, Columbo signs a huge deal somewhere else and Al Johnson gets ludicrous money (not improbable in this market) on the market. It could be said that Dallas traded Johnson for a fourth round pick or so when the NFL awards Dallas the comp picks. Not a bad deal for a backup center.
