From what little I've seen of him, I just don't think he has "it".
Ellis developed at the OLB spot so well that we no longer needed Carpenter for that spot. Also, Parcells realized that Carpenter was better suited for the inside than the outside (something many scouts had said before the draft) so he moved him inside. We already had James inside at the Mike and had already brought in a FA (Ayodele) to play the Jack position so Carpenter finds himself at the number two spot behind Ayodele. He is playing in nickel situations and a few special packages.nathanlt said:How has Carpenter looked in the preseason games? Is he doing ok?
Is that the whole story? Ellis played a role, but my impression of reports from training camp were that Carpenter didn't look as good playing outside LB as inside LB. I could be wrong though.Manster68 said:Look folks,
Carpenter is learning a new position as he was moved inside. He was moved inside because it looks as if the Ellis project is working very nicely.
I think that's a great point.Manster68 said:Remember, Bradie James is in his fourth season and Akin Ayodele is in his fifth. Both of those players have significant experience playing inside and they have been very productive.
One last thing to remember - the better this team gets, the harder it is for first year players to crack the starting lineup. So Carpenter not starting is actually a very good sign that the quality of talent on this team is vastly improving.
When it is imperative that your draft picks MUST start right away should tell you that your favorite team isn't very good.
I agree with your post and they are all excellent points. One thing though...didn't Ayodele play outside for the Jags? He is also learning a new position. But of course he still has far more experience and is a more mature Pro Football player in general than Carpenter. Nothing against Carpenter; I think he will have that job soon enough.Manster68 said:Look folks,

He may have; I don't pay a lot of attention to the Jags except when we play them. But I've only ever heard them talk about him on the outside...maybe because that was what he was playing last year.Manster68 said:I though he played both Jack.
I wouldn't say invisible but he certainly hasn't exploded on the scene. I still think he will be a good player for us for a long while to come once he gets it rolling. I think he will be kinda like Bradie James; I was ready to dump him after two years but he has come around and made a pretty good player for us.Qwickdraw said:Everyone here seems to be responding sarcastically but so far, he's been invisible.
