I think based on everything I've seen in FA and media comments, this is what we can expect to see the Cowboys do
Just did 4 rounds

Free Agency:
sign Chris Long DE
Signed: Cedric Thornton DT
Signed: Josh Thomas CB
Signed: Mo Claiborne CB
Signed: James Hanna TE
Signed: Kyle Wilber LB
Signed: Charles Brown OT

Draft:
4: R1P4
RB EZEKIEL ELLIOTT
OHIO STATE
Playmaker, stud RB, will have game changing potential behind elite Dallas OLine

34: R2P3
CB WILLIAM JACKSON III
HOUSTON
Starting caliber 6' CB w strong ball skills

67: R3P4
C NICK MARTIN
NOTRE DAME
Replacement for Bernadeau, can play center or either guard spot

102: R4P3
QB DAK PRESCOTT
MISSISSIPPI STATE
Backup QB w potential to develop and start after Romo retires

137: R4P38
WR LEONTE CARROO
Strong hands, strong routes, tough, gritty, high production in college, potential to replace TWill next season in Free Agency

.......................................
this would surprise me
if you could find a safety or DT [1 or 3] I'd be delighted.
I think Elliott puts "W" on the board
I know it's against the FO philosophy ect. ect.

67: R3P4
C NICK MARTIN
NOTRE DAME
Replacement for Bernadeau, can play center or either guard spot

What leads you to believe Zeke is a real option?

Doubt we take Zeke at 4. I do like William Jackson but he may sneak into the first. With Dak's DUI I don't think we'd even take him in the 4th.

We lost most of our games by less than a touchdown because the opposition used no-frills basic game plan against us, knowing we couldn't score. I am not opposed to drafting Elliot, but unless we add pass-rushers, we will have to score 30+ per game to have a chance.

Whoa, we won't have to score 30 to win with Elliot. He would be a monster

I have no problem taking Zeke at 4. I think he is the player we could take that would give us the most bang.

I really don't mind the other players you have taken although I am not as high on Dak as the Cowboys "seem" to be.

With that said...I just can't see them going 4 rounds without only one defensive player. IF they don't take a defensive player in the first round...I imagine they do in the next 2-3 minimum.

His talent matches an area of need for us and provides a long term option

On the flip side, the owner/GM has said they won't pay TBs a lot of money.

I think people thinking the Cowboys are going to choose Elliott at 4 are doing it more based on wishful thinking than reality.

I think you might be referring to FAs. I don't think we are overly concerned about drafting a stud in the first because of the financial impact of his rookie contract.

I've already stated my "wish" would be to bring back Hardy and then go Ramsey with the 1st pick and DT w the 2nd pick.

RB with the first isn't my main preference but I'm thinking of what I could see us doing and how it would be explained to the media after.

Sure I'd be excited if we got Zeke but not more excited than I'd be if we loaded up on defense and created a nightmare for opposing QBs.

Except they didn't distinguish between FA and draft pick. Jones clearly stated they do not want to put significant money into the position. And then have operated that way for 2 years now.

In fact, I suspect the exact same thing is going to happen.............. they will eschew (and have) and FAs that will cost money and then look to the mid round of the draft (like they tried last year) to find a TB.

I just don't believe there is any chance at all that they'd take Elliott at 4.

Who plays QB when Romo goes down week 3?

According to the OP mock draft, probably Dak Prescott... who, by the way, wouldn't be any less ready than whomever
is anyone's favorite QB selection at 4th overall might be.

Don't forget that Romo is the starter from day one... it won't be like Winston or Mariota had it last year... the #2 guy
doesn't get enough reps in camp to be able to jump in and handle everything in week 3.

So, if Romo goes down again this year, we are not much better off at QB.
