to win the game for the Eagles? Would that have been the worst loss in Cowboy history? Worse than "the catch?" Worse than the Jackie Smith "drop?"
Would Cortez still be running from Larry Allen?
Is Cortez still an Eagle? I don't even recall if he played Monday night. If memory serves me right, the Eagles haven't won a game since Cortez became an Eagle, or maybe only 1.

I thought of that the other night. With Cortez strong leg, I wouldn't have been surprised if they would have let Cortez attempt it. Boy that would have been sickening if he had made it, wouldn't it?

And if Akers had made that field goal...I would be searching records to see if an opposing team had ever MISSED a FG against Dallas. It seems like there are more long field goals made against our Boys than every other team combined.

and had a nice little arrogant grin when they showed him on the sidelines at one point when the Eagles were up 20-7

What may have even been a better ending would have been for the Eagles to get into FG range and Akers to get hurt and on comes Cortez to miss a chip shot game winner from 40 yards.

Cortez did handle the Kickoffs Mon nite. I wondered why they didn't send him in to try the 60 yarder. I was holding my breath thinking "if Cortez comes in and hits a 60 then it's offical no one will EVER miss against us". Thankfully it didn't come to that

How could a guy that can't consistently make kicks under 30 make a kick from half that distance.

Akers has serious range -- he may hit a 60 sometime in his career.

Does anyone know what round Akers was drafted in? Oh wait, he wasn't -- but we should throw a pick away on a kicker anyway.

I wouldn't do anything because Larry Allen would have done it for me. :D

Jerry said he watched Akers hit them from 58 yards consistently in the pre-game warm-ups, so he was very afraid Akers was going to make it.

I wonder if someone got a slight hand on that kick because it wasn't even close.

Cortez doesn't have that strong a leg. His kickoffs were not very good against Dallas Monday night. A less than 100% healthy Akers had a better chance than Cortez on that long FG attempt. I don't think it was partially blocked. Akers just miss hit it. He probably trying to give it a little extra umph and missed the sweet spot on the ball. Happens to guys all the time on the golf course. An overswing. Even if he it is just right, he still probably would have missed. It was a difficult field goal and he isn't 100%.

It would've been devastating, although nowhere near as bad as "The Catch" (my first Cowboy memory) or the drop. In fact, I can think of several more devastating moments: The loss to the Browns in 1994 when Novacek fumbled at the end, this year's loss to the Commanders, the pure humiliation of being blown out by the Bears 44-0 in 1985, the opening day loss to the Eagles in Campo's first year, the opening loss to the Texans in Campo's last year, the 1994 NFC Championship loss to the 49ers (maybe the most devastating for me, if only for the tragic, almost Shakespearian nature of it), the 1986 loss to the Giants when Danny White got injured, the Leon Lett Thanksgiving debacle, the playoff loss to Carolina in 1996, the loss to Arizona in the 1998 playoffs, the loss to the Rams in the 1985 playoffs when Dickerson went crazy and we lost Septien and were at the point of using Brian Salonen for field goals (thankfully we didn't.)

As you can see, we've had our share of heartbreakers. It was nice to be on the other side for a change.

Pretty suspicious when a kicker (Cortez) leaves a team (Dallas) under somewhat contentious circumstances, or so it has been reported, and then kicker's new team(philly) seem to be completed prepared for plays that Dallas TE Campbell says the team has never run in any games before.
I'd say Jose photocopied the playbook sometime while in Dallas, just in case.

Novacek didn't fumble, he slipped in a wet spot in the turf a yard or so away from the goal line on 4th down. But, yes that was a disappointing loss. The team came out flat that game. Aikman was rusty in his first game back from a hamstring injury. They win that game, then they probably don't rest the starters in the season finale at the Giants and have a chance for home field advantage in the playoffs.
