What if NFL removes Salary Cap?

The NFL can't "throw out" the salary cap. It is part of the collective bargaing agreement with the NFLPA. The owners wanted a cap, the players wanted a floor. You can't have one without the other. Next CBA will probably mirror this one in that regard.

The cap was put in because of Jones and Dibartlo spending more than the other owners because they wanted to win SBs and the hell with player salaries. Whoever won the NFC championship game was going to win the SB. Jerry would love to have that again

Actually, that's not true at all.

Jerry Jones was one of the largest proponents of the salary cap. The reason why the owners wanted it instituted was to limit the cost to owners once free agency came to be. As much as these guys want to "win", they are businessmen first. And, prior to the cap being instituted, the Cowboys salaries were relatively low due to the age of the roster.

Keep in mind that in 1993, Jones said to Emmitt Smith during their contract negotiations that he (Jones) would walk across a desert for a dollar.

The salary cap is not a bad thing at all. It rewards those that scout well, plan well, draft well and run their organization properly.

I want the 53 man roster to expand to 63 and practice squad to like 20. No development league the NFL needs something big.

There just isn't enough talent out there to fill up 32 NFL teams much less a development league.

The majority of NFL defenses are terrible and most of the league has bad offensive lines as well so its not like a developmental league is going to help this cause.

You may find a few guys that develop into legit special teamers but that's about it.

The Cowboys have double the revenue of small market teams. There's no way they'll drop the salary cap.

I didn't mean the NFL needs a developmentally league. I meant, they don't have one so they need to expand team rosters to allow teams to develop players.

You clearly dont get it. Cap is not about competitive balance. It is about making sure the Bidwells and the Browns get their fill at the troth.

II stand corrected then. You and Xwalker has pointed this out. I thought I read someone where that the other teams were afraid that the Niners or the Cowboys were going to after Reggie White in FA but i guess God told him to go to Green Bay. Thanks for clearing it up.

White signed in free agency with the Packers in 1993 - the year before the cap went into effect.

And, God told him to go to Green Bay if he meant that he read the back of a dollar bill, and read In God We Trust.

There are over 200 college programs.......there are plenty of players to fill out the rosters

Set the cap at 500mil.

That would be an interesting development.

It's speculated only two teams in entire NFL made more than $500M in 2015 -- the Cowboys (~$700M'ish) and the Patriots (~$523M'ish).

The only team where the revenue is known for certain is Green Bay, who had $408.7 million of revenue in 2015 -- $222.6 million of which came from revenue sharing.

Basically with a cap of $500M it would be a 2-4 team league. I think it would be safe to say the Cowboys chances of winning it all would be greatly increased :)

This way, if you really say you want to win, max it out. If not, then we know where your heart is

They could fix the NFL if they laid out a plan that anyone you draft doesn't count against the cap or its at a reduced rate. This would encourage teams to draft better/not take risks on high risk players and allow a drafted player to make more money across his contract.

The Salary Cap era rewards the teams with the greatest QB's because you can't afford to retain the rest of your stars for their career.

The NFL isn't interested in fixing the Cap.

Not unless they feel the watering down of talent throughout the league leads to less revenue and interest by the fans.

Half the team or 26 guys account for 10% of the cap ......the QB counts for 10-15%

So the other 26 guys get to split up 125m+ or how much the entire cap was 4 years ago

The cap is not a problem
