What if the Cowboys draft a corner at 28?

I know most of the speculation surrounding on Dallas' first round pick has centered around the several possible defensive ends that could be chosen. Could it be, however, that they choose to go with a cornerback, rather than the coveted position of edge rusher?

I have wondered if they would not pick a corner, if they were somewhat satisfied that the pass rush could be improved upon with the current players on the roster. Especially after we had the exiting of defensive backs in free agency. I'm not saying this is the best way to go; honestly, I really do not know if it is or not. But I am beginning to think it is a possibility.

Since the aforementioned pass rushers have been in the spotlight, let me ask this. If a cornerback is the choice, which one would you prefer?

I know this link has been posted in the newsfeed forum, but it seems Spagnola is thinking the same thing.

My expectation is that they take a CB in the first. My fear is they leave better players on the board to do it.

Personally, I hope they take McDowell at 28 and then go after the DBs. But I am not convinced that's what they will do. And I haven't seen enough of the CBs to even have a favorite.

DB is very likely BPA at position of need at #28. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

If Tapper is healthy he could very well be part of the answer at DE. By all means, grab the best CB available at 28.

You know how I feel about Tapper. If he is healthy, I'm thinking he is going to be a dandy of a player.

I think the first three picks are very like DE, CB and S but they should pick them according to their board and not because they just want a DE at 28. There are good players available at all three positions for the first three rounds, there is no reason to draft outside their board.

People are way overfocused on need.

First year pass rushers generally don't do much.

Nobody will regret a pick if he is great regardless of position (see Zeke).

The problem is, they don't need another body at DE. They got plenty of those.

They need a big time talent at DE. You can only get that by taking one early.

I would be livid if we took a corner at 28. There will be a CB available at 60 that will be similarly graded.

Taking a corner first means you have to pray a guy like Basham, Rivers, or Willis makes it to 60.

Conley has the best production, King has the best measurables, Humphrey has the best projection, so we end up with T. White.

Draft a War Daddy, if it's a DB so albeit, why not but maybe it better be a Safety unless a dominant CB like Gareon Conley slides.

War Daddy?

I can see it happening too. They go into this.... grouping guys for certain rounds....then taking that position regardless who is available. That seems to be their new way of drafting.

1st...Gareon Conley CB Ohio St./Adoree Jackson CB/WR USC/Kevin King CB Washington/Fabian Moreau CB UCLA

2nd...Derek Rivers DE Youngstown St./Tarell Basham DE-OLB Ohio/Tim Williams DE-LB Alabama/TJ Watt LB Wisconsin

3rd...Josh Jones SS NC State/Eddie Jackson SS Alabama/Xavier Woods SS La. Tech

4th....Larry Ogunjobi DT Charlotte/Dalvin Tomlinson DE5 Alabama/Jaleel Johnson NT Iowa

Archer suggests the Cowboys take not one but two corners, and has just the prospect for the Cowboys:

The question isn’t whether the Cowboys will draft one cornerback, it’s whether they will draft two cornerbacks. The last time they took two corners in the same year was 2009, but those selections came in the fifth and seventh rounds. In 2008, they selected Mike Jenkins in the first round and Scandrick in the fifth round.

Best fit: Kevin King, Washington. At the start of the draft process his teammate, Sidney Jones, drew more attention than King, but as the process winds down, King is finding himself as a first-round lock. He has good size (6-3) and is aggressive. He can make tough plays and has good body control. He led Washington with 15 pass deflections and picked off two passes. He plays with an attitude, and that’s something the secondary needs...
