What is Parcells thinking on draft day? What will he do? What is his history? Let's look into the mind of Parcells for a few moments.

I've been trying to figure out what Parcells is going to do in this years draft, and of course that's impossible.

So I decided to check his history and how he's drafted in the past to give me a tiny bit of an indicator of what Parcells might do. Usually a person has a philosophy and will stand by it. A trend if you will, and people rarely change, especially at Parcells age.

So I did some research. I researched all of Parcells drafts from 1983 until last year. I only went as far as the 7th round, since some of the earlier drafts went 10 or so rounds deep.

So let's take a look.

NY Giants
1983S / DT / TE / TE / LB / CB
1984 OLB / G / QB / T / ILB / DB / DE / WR
1985 RB / WR / DB / C / TE / WR / G / DB
1986 DE / MLB / DE / WR / WR / WR / RB
1987 WR / S / WR / WR / G / T
1988 G / T / CB / OLB / DE / G / QB / TE
1989C / SS / RB / NT / RB / TE / T
1990 RB / DE / ILB / DB / QB / RB

New England
1993 QB / DE / WR / NT / SS / K / TE / DE
1994 OLB / WR / NT / C / TE / P / WR / QB / MLB
1995 CB / ILB / RB / CB / G / WR
1996 WR / SS / ILB / G / DE / G / DT / TE / DT / TE / G

N Y Jets
1997 ILB / DT / WR / DE / RB / G / S / LB / S / NT
1998 DE / FS / FS / T / LB / G / TE / T / WR / RB / TE
1999 G / G / NT / CB / LB / C / T / LB

Dallas Cowboys
2003 CB / C / TE / LB / DB / WR / G
2004 RB / T / G / CB / TE / CB / WR
2005 OLB / DE / LB / RB / DE / FS / OT / DL

Now, let's break it down by comparing what positions Parcells favored in rounds 1 thru 7.

1. 1st round = 4 LB-----2 RB,G,DE ,CB----1 QB,C,S----0 TE,T,DT,K,P

2. 2nd round = 3-
LB,DE-----2 G,NT,S----1 RB,T,C----0 QB,TE,CB,K,P

3. 3rd round = 2 TE,C,LB,CB,-----1 QB,G,DT,DE,S-----0 RB,T,K,P

4. 4th thru 7th= 10 G---8 TE,LB--7 T --6 RB,DT,S---5 QB,DE,CB--1 C,K,P

A few things I realized from this list. 1st off, Parcells loves to draft Linebackers - with Parcells drafting 17 LB'rs in his career (not including late late draft choices. He's drafted 4 in the 1st round and 3 in the 2nd round of his career.

For those who wanted a tackle in the 1st, judging by Parcells history, it's probably not going to happen. (but you never know)

He's only drafted 1 quarterback in the 1st round, 1 safety, and no Tackles, EVER. So the chances of Parcells' drafting a T, S, or a QB is slim to none.

If you look at Parcells history, he tends to favor Linebackers, Wide Receivers and Guards. And if you look at his history, he loves to stock pile picks, and chain draft certain areas of weakness, like in 1986 where he drafted 3 WR in a row.
If you see anything else Parcells favors, feel free to post.

1998 DE / FS / FS / T / LB / G / TE / T / WR / RB / TE
1999 - / G / G / NT / CB / LB / C / T / LB

Dallas Cowboys
2000 DE / DE / QB / WR / WR / CB / DE

Well lets not overlook 2000 with the Jets where he cleaned house by taking 2 DE's and a QB in the first round- and that would make it 2 #1 round qb's. So with that all being said, the only place (aside from his current gig with us) he's drafted a "franchise" QB in every place except when he was with the Giants and they already had Simms. So I somewhat believe (and have since he's come here) that sometime before he leaves he will set us up with our future QB. Inwhich I think is the only trend you can take from all of this.
Oh and that he's really trying to find that second coming of LT with all of his LB and DE picks he's used up in the first round ever since. With every team he's given them the abilty to throw and the ability to knock the thrower on his butt. We have Ware and Spears, now all he has left is our next QB to fill the role of. And don't think for a second that guy is on this team at the moment...it's NOT Henson, people!

Nice pst Cowboy_love_4ever,

But at the Giants, didn't George Young control the draft ? I'm sure BP had input, but I heard up here that George was in control...

Also in NE, word was that BP wasn't "Buying the groceries" and that he didn't want to draft Terry Glen.

Jets through the Cowboys tho, I think BP had 100% control.

This is interesting. In 1984, I believe the Giants drafted Bill Roberts, Tackle 1st round, 27th pick over all. In 1988, I think the Giants drafted Eric Moore, Tackle 1st round, 10th pick and then Jumbo Elliot 2nd round. In 1993, the Pats took Todd Rucci in the 2nd round. Of course, Jake Rogers in the 2nd roound in 2004.

Appreciate all the hard work. You might want to take a look at updated 2 round GBN mock draft I posted yesterday. All but 2 OTs dropped to 2nd round (Winston Justice projected go to us with 17th pick).

GBN projected 6 LBs go in first round with 3 still available after we pick Justice; one of the 3 is Bobby Carpenter who goes to Giants with 25th pick.

Based on your info & GBN updated mock draft, we could try move down to pick up 3rd or 4th rounder & select Bobby Carpenter but at 20th KC projected select Tamba Hall, NE at 21 gets Demeco Ryans, Denver selects Ko Simpson & Ernis Sims goes to Tampa so there real risk we could lose Carpenter unless we only move down 1-2 positions. Of course if Manny Lawson slides to us, I'd grab him. Anyway, w/o knowing who Cowboys sign in FA, here's my projected picks:

*1) Bobby Carpenter (unless Manny Lawson slides to us)
*2) OT Ryan O'Callaghan or Jonathan Scott
3) FS (Pat Watkins, Nate Salley or Anthony Smith could be available) or
WR/DT

*Carpenter & O'Callaghan projected to go 7 picks below us so we could drop down. Scott projected 10 picks below us. Combines might change all this of course.

I'm not sure what Parcells will do either, but I know he loves getting his paws on defenders, guards, & Wide receivers.

I don't know if McNeill or any other guy at there at the Tackle position (outside of Ferguson) will warrant BP taking him in the 1st round.

Don't be surprised if BP trade down, he loves to gain extra picks.

I really wouldn't mind seeing us take a safety... Bing from USC, Huff from Texas, Simpson from S. Carolina, etc. etc. Very good depth in the draft for safeties.

Coming out, neither Roberts or Moore were listed as Guards. They were both Tackles.

said it before -- and I'll keep saying it until the end of April.

you don't spend a #1 on a right tackle - especially #18 overall. any tackle that is that good should be on the other side. and we don't need an LT.

That was also 17 years ago in 1988 when he drafted those players. I'm not sure about this, but BP probably had alot of input back then, but not all the input.

And something else jumped out, he didn't attack the draft with defenders (which I think was a mistake) in his first couple of years with Dallas. Almost as if he was trusting in Zimmers scheme and players... He fixed that quickly last season though.:)

I think you have a point in the 17 years ago thing but I think thats explained in the fact that he didn't have the relationships or over all player knowledge he has today. He couldn't go out and sign a guy that he felt comfortable with because he hadn't had the opportunity to develope that comfort level yet. Having said that, if the best player available to us at 18 is an OT and no trade is workable, I believe he will draft an OT. It would be silly not to IMO and I just don't see Parcells as stupid.

Set in his way and a bit bull headed? Absolutly but not stupid. That is not him IMO.
