If he plays well enough during the remaining games to convince Jerry that he is the right QB to lead the Cowboys, what type of contract extension do you think he will warrant?

I know the Cowboys have been in good cap shape for some time, somewhat due to the fact that the QB position hasn't been a major financial investment. I wonder what impact keeping Tony would have on FA activity and future player resigning.

I'm not trying to get ahead of myself here, I'm just curious to how the situation could possibly pan out.

Right now he is signed for two year. 900K this year, 1.1 mil next. Lets not get to concerned until the start of Camp next year. Could be, right now, as cheap a starting QB as you can get in this league.

Let's see what they have after two years at QB buddy before contract talks are mentioned, it's only ONE game.

P.S. I'm a Romo supporter.

Right now he is not costing much and since Dallas already gave him an extension the Cowboys can afford to allow Romo to play this season and next before we need to talk about any new extensions.

we should still be in fine shape with qb cap status. drew will drop off and romo will get somewhere around the same money for a couple of years.it might be in our best interest to get a couple more years extended this off season. don't like going into a season with your qb in his last year

I thought I qualified the question fairly well.

I figure if he pans out that they'll want to extend him early on next year. What I am wondering is how much that will be.

You were quite clear and I feel the same way. I wondered the same thing on another thread. I think we'll know by the end of this season (at least 9 more games) what we have. IF he plays well for the remainder of this year and looks like the long term answer at QB, why wouldn't you immediately try to get him extended? It seems like you could build a fair and reasonable 3-4 yr deal that wouldn't kill the cap.

I have read we are about 17 million under the cap for next year, and I don't see any HUGE fA signings next year, except maybe an OL.. most of the guys are already wrapped up to long term deals.. I think we are in really great shape at this point.

I'm glad we not only have the rest of this year, but next year to really figure this question out. It isn't how much is he worth, but is he really worth having. He is showing something really great now, but QBs arn't made in a single game, month, or season. The more time the better. If he proves worthy, Jones will pay him and pay him well. No worries there.

It depends on what he does, if he turns into Aaron Brooks then they part ways, if he turns into marc Bulger they probably keep him for Delhomme like money, if he turns into Tom Brady he breaks the bank.

With Romo you really take the "wait and see" approach.

I'm not saying he's going to be good or bad. Just saying you want to see how he performs over time, and if he's able to stay healthy and play consistent over the next nine games. If so, he certainly will deserve a contract extension with a raise in salary and modest bonus.

If not you may want to draft a guy in the 1st or 2nd round.

Yep, that would be the reasonable approach but for six years Dallas has not tried such things although they did waste a second rounder on the athletic but dimwitted Quincy Carter and a third rounder on the rusty "I'm quickly becoming Chris Weinke" Henson, it was going to be hard for anybody to come in and make people forget about Troy Aikman but for half a decade his ghost has lingered ever present.
