What is the best thing for Greg Ellis and the Cowboys

As reported Greg will be at the start of training camp but is still not happy with his reduced role on this defensive squad. He is on the wrong side of 30 and I'm sure wants to secure his remaining years in the NFL with a new contract. He may not be the perfect fit in Bill's 3-4 defense but good players will make plays in any system. This is not the year to have a troubled player in the locker room.I am sure Bill and Jerry want let him be a distraction very long. It's just a shame because he has been a good player for a long time on some bad teams and this would be a chance to finally get some rewards. How would you handle Greg and if he has to go what are you looking for the Cowboys to get in return?

It's best for us to get something for Ellis and allow this guy to finish his career playing in the 4-3. It's also the right thing to do.

First I'd tell Greg to shutup and play.Last time I looked,Greg was getting paid to play football.Do your job.If he were to be traded,I'd expect a 6th or 7th round pick for him.

I would do nothing, he signed the contract he has to play it out. Gregg has always been a quiet guy, he wont be a locker room distractionm

But to me, it's like asking Bledsoe to play in a bootleg oriented offense. They knew Ellis was not a 3-4 guy and should have traded him 2 years ago, but didn't. It's time to move on and let new guys step up.

I don't think he will be a problem or a distraction. I expect him to go to camp and give his best effort. If I'm wrong and he does become a distraction to the team then release him irregardless if you get anything in return or not. I have said before the off-season is the time to discuss concerns that a player has, but once you hit camp that kind of stuff has to be put on the back burner until the season is done.

The best thing would be for Greg to shut up and play well in the nickel.

We most likely won't trade him because his value will be low. So if he gets cut, he's going to lose money.

But, if he plays well in the nickel and is serviceable in the 3-4, he's got the options of possibly retiring a Cowboy and getting paid his contract or us cutting him and his price tag going up because he can rush the passer effectively and play the 3-4 if needed. Furthermore, us cutting down his reps will only prolong his career.

I wish Ellis would grasp this concept.

However, Ellis did play relatively well in the 3-4. Why do you think Parcells has shown zero interest in getting rid of him?

He knows Ellis can play a role and help the team win this year.

The best thing for Ellis to do is shut up and play hard all year. Dallas will likely cut him next year and if he has a decent year, he'll get his precious payday.

to me football is football.yes certain guys excell in certain areas.the point on defense is tackle the guy with the ball. You're right,Bledsoe wouldnt be good at a bootleg offense.but, that kind of thinking would have never brought Bob Hayes into football.Bullet Bob was drafted because Landry wanted a speedster to change the passing game.

If a 6th or 7th was the best Dallas could pull, I would just make him play it out. he is still good for at least 6-8 sacks a year and if he got out of hand just leave his arse at home. He makes great money now and if players get the drift of just not liking a system and pitching a b.... to get out it will be a very bad message to send.

All I know is, if they try and make him some type of outside linebacker, that will be a disaster.

If we were to trade Ellis, I don't think we would get much in return for him, lucky to get a late rounder for him, IMO.

The BEST thing would be to trade him for Carson Palmer but I cannot imagine the Bengals going for that one. Plus Ellis isn't a thug so they probably wouldn't want him anyway.

He will play out this season and then be traded or released.

Clove, if the Cowboys let Ellis go, don't you think he should return the half million dollars the club paid him this summer? If he had to do that, do you think he still would want his release? The opportunities for him out there might not be so attractive in that case. Maybe that $500,000.00 should have been enough of a "committment" for awhile.

I think it would be best if Greg Ellis shows up to camp with Randy Moss and tells us the Raiders have offered The Cowboys Randy Moss for the rights to Ellis and Glenn's contracts:starspin :starspin :starspin :starspin

Hell yeah he should pay every cent back. But I don't know if I want a person playing half speed on a team that could be a Super Bowl contender.

If he gets nicked up, I don't want a guy pretending to be more hurt than he is. These are things that some players do to prove to the organization that if they are not happy, they will dogg it, and you can't prove it.
