Yes, Stanback and Jamaica Rector, Butler et al are banged up at the present time.

But why have Newman and Crayton return punts???

This is madness, subjecting Newman to unnecessary hits whether in camp, preseason or the regular season.

We cannot afford Newman to go down on some silly punt return.

Special teams is 1/3rd of the game. The better you are in ST, the better your team is overall. Stars have returned kicks since stars were born. Let him return.

I agree. Its senseless to use Newman to return punts. I quiver everytime I see him back there. Exciting yes, but way too much risk for me.

There's no way I want Newman or Crayton to return punts in preseason. We usually use our starters for a quarter or less in first preseason game and that's because we want to save them and there's no reason to risk injury in a game of limited importance. Using either of these 2 players as punt returns makes no sense. Hopefully we use someone, even if that player calls for a fair catch every time, rather then risk injury to any starter.

In Raphael Vela's blog this evening he reported that Urban took all the punts today. So sounds like he's got the job for Thursday nite thus we don't have to worry about Newman or Crayton. Also, as I've already stated, this gives Urban a chance to show he can also contribute on ST as the punt returner along with whatsoever WR skills he can showcase in preseason games.

Per Vela: Jehreme Urban took all of the punt returns during the special teams session, although McBriar didn't actually punt. Instead, Patrick Crayton simulated punts by throwing the ball downfield.

i agree with you here, however i keep seeing the hit he took against the colts in the regular season last year by hayden...i was also reminded of it by SI in their big hits issue. Newman, when he has the ball, can do amazing things like he did at kansas state...but because teams dont throw at him he cant make things happen...STs is a sure fired way to get the ball in his hands.

Understandable. I didn't like Deion, so it never bothered me.

:laugh2:

However, I like Newman, and want him to avoid ST duty.

Newman is an elite punt returner.

He plays defense.

He's supposed to hit stuff.

That ought to settle it.

That is exactly what came to mind
But I referenced Newman because of the here and now and because Newman is the leader of a defensive unit that is not deep.
But yes, it was chilling to see Deion returning punts (or was it kickoffs?) and then seeing every defensive player make a beeline for his kneees
And putting Newman in harm's way? Madness.

There thinking that special teams is part of the game and when we need a chance at a big return that Newman can do the job. They are not going to coach based on a possiable injury they are going to try and put the best they have out there. No different than when Deion Sanders returned punts, he did not do it all the time but in big situation Deion would be back there.
