What rookies can start for us position by position

I know many of us are thinking that our first pick should compete for a starting spot. I was going through our roster as I was jogging today, trying to think of positions where a rookie could come in and start (barring injury).

Which rookies (if any) do you think can come in and start for us?

QB: No......No way can a rookie come in and start for us at RB
RB: Peterson is the only one that comes to mind right now
WR: Possibly Johnson....but Glenn is still a tough matchup for any CB, and TO is still one of the best period.
TE: None
OL: Joe Thomas (depending on which Flo shows up), Ben Grubbs, Justin Blalock?

DL: Alan Branch....although, I don't think he can start in front of Fergeson, I do think there's a chance he can start in front of Canty or Spears (based on what we've seen of them)

LB: Adams (assuming he can make the switch to LB), Willis

CB: Hall and Revis can really push Henry I think. I don't think any other CB would start in front of Henry, IMO.

S: Merriweather, Nelson, Landry, Griffin

So really, there's a short list of potential draftees that can come in and start for us right away.

Peterson
Johnson
Thomas
Grubbs
Blalock
Branch
Adams
Willis
Hall
Revis
Merriweather
Nelson
Landry
Griffin

That's 14 players. There may be more....I guess everyone's opinions will vary. There aren't really any holes on our team. I really feel that we can draft the BPA on every single pick.

Are there any other rookies that you feel can come in and start?

good post & I agree with those on the first pick.

oddly enough we may pick up a starter or part-time starter somewhere closer to the 5th round like FB LeRon McClain - if we do indeed go with more of a power running game. He seems to be a high character guy & a good blocker & receiver.

If we still run a two TE offense, Olsen might replace Fasano. At FB LeRon McClain has been mentioned over Hoyte.

If we stay at 22 we won't be drafting for a starter this year. That player will be projected to be starting next year. So the better question is, who won't be starting next year and doesn't have a backup ready to be a starter? Ferg? Glenn? Henry?

If Hamlin returns to his pre injury form, I really could not see any rookie beating him out.

Watkins will be Hamlin's competition

Particularly with Jones stressing the "QB of the defense" quality and how he doesn't believe a rookie could handle the responsibility.

That tells me that our secondary calls might be more detailed under Phillips and we need a veteran.

I think its possible that someone like Jarvis Moss could start over Ellis.

Ellis will have to convince me he can come back from that injury because thats not an easy injury to overcome. Especially for a football player.

Best bet for a rookie to "start" would be a nickle DB (Merriweather?). I know A. Glenn is back but at some point he'll slow down, and probably quickly. FB would be another option but certainly won't be an early pick.

Your post is well thought out and logical from a certain perspective; however, anyone who drafts in any round, but especially the first round, based on which player or position could come in and start right way, is an idiot who will find himself with a mediocre team in the years to come.

You must draft the best player available...position of need applies only if several players are close in value...If you have a young Emmitt Smith and Peterson is the top player on the board when you're up, you better trade down or take Peterson...never take a lower player.

The NFL only means "Not for Long" if you start drafting for starters in their first year instead of building the most talented and deep team you can, considering your team situation in the next 5 years.

You don't win the SB this year by counting on rookies to start and win it for you. You win the SB 2-3 years down the road when super talented players start to play like superstars.

Anyone that's known me...at least on the boards...will tell you that my draft philosophy is simple.

Best available player.

I was simply trying to think of where a rookie might start on our team. If, for instance, Russell fell to us at 22....I would take him, even though we have Romo.

So, I agree with you.

This was just a post to try to get into our staff's minds just a bit. Because, whether we want to believe it or not, I think a player's ability to come in and start does play a factor in whether or not they're chosen.

Moss would not start over either Ellis or Carp... he's too weak at this point and wouldn't hold up against the run.

rb- peterson, lynch
wr- johnson (don't think he starts but is a beast working the slot for a year then starts his sophomore season allowing Owens to be cut or Glenn to retire.
T- probably a handful that could start at rt and nobody would beat out Adams in their first year.
G- three to five could beat out Kozier
LB- several if Ellis doesn't come back 100%
CB- that would be tough but there are a few that might allow Henry to move where I think he belongs and that is FS
FS- Landry, Nelson could beat out Hamlin

that is why I think Dallas needs to move up to grab a potential starter or move out and get a possible high pick for next year because I don't think anyone at 22 could win a starting spot unless Henry was moved to FS then a CB might start.

I would still sacrifice this draft and move up for Johnson.

The 'Boys will be sacrificing lot more than this year's draft just to get Johnson, they will also sacrifice next year's draft.

Normally I would agree with you on that, but Jerry claims that Wade looks at pass rush ability and not run and pass coverge as much so I'm not so sure that would keep a rookie OLB from starting. (I really think that if Wade was here last season, Manny Lawson would have been the pick over Carpenter)
