That JJ and BP will count on the O-Line fixing itself and devote resources to other places- this is how I see it going.

1. They assume Flo will come back 100% from injury and lock down LT.
2. They assume LA has another year in him
3. They assume, Al, 2 years removed from surgery will add strength
4. They assume Marco will be much better with a healthy off season
5. They assume Rob will improve in his second year.

No way all these things happen... and IMO, nothing but #1 is probable but it scares the crap out of me that the braintrust might buy into it.

I think #1 is almost 100%.
I think #2 is 50%.
I think #3 is 60%.
I think #4 is 75%.
I think #5 is 60%.

The result is I could see us spending a 2nd rounder on a OL of some sort and perhaps signing a guard or center.

Much will depend on Larry Allen and if he retires. Certainly there is a chance that BOTH Allen and Rivera will retire. Not a big chance... I would say maybe 10% but still a chance.

I personally feel Petitti WILL have a good offseason and will be more than capable of manning the RT spot next year at an acceptable level.

Our linebackers are a mess. I see our first rounder being used on a quality backer if we're going to stick with the 3-4.

And FS is just a car-wreck.

I think most (if not all) of those thing will happen. The problem starts with Gurode, Peterman and the other backups. Can they step up if any of those 5 things do not happen. Probably not.

We need one good lineman at the ready and maybe a developmental one also just in case.

I think we need more than that.

Seems like we haven't had a good Oline since the early 90's. Draft picks don't pan out, injuries, free agent busts. Lot of teams have Oline problems though.

I wish we had a QB who didn't need a great Oline to be effective.

You also forget that in addition to not pass blocking they sucked at run blocking as well. ANyone trying to blame the QB for the O lines failures really is STUPID.

As far as I'm concerned everyone except Flo at this point is no better than a good backup.

We need at least 3 good OLinmen to replace the current starters. Maybe even more.

Exactly. One addition to the OL is not enough...especially since Parcells runs it up the middle every time on first down. :)

We gotta sign a great Center and kicker, if not the same thing that happened this year will happen next year. Also need a new coaching philosophy that attacks teams when they are down not keep them in the game

What Scares Me About the Offseason

Is that we will stick with our current offensive and defensive philosophy/coordinators and stick with an umproven/sorry *** kicker

I have no concerns with Jeff Ireland running the draft

I just hope we dont overpay more aging vets whose best days are behind them like Bledsoe, Rivera and Ferguson

Playing not to lose indeed cost us a chance at the playoffs

I think BP, Payton and Zimmer have indeed earned something for their efforts this year

If by what you mean is if one leaves or is fired, all of them should be fired. I agree. The playcalling, readnreact D has been their fault. Injuries or not. We need to be able to cover for the players' weaknesses and play to their strenghes, something we didnt do against Denver, NYFG and Washington. Yet our talented players have kept us close in those games against KC and Carolina.

We will need to focus more on the draft than FA due to our average age on the OLine in the 30's. Focus on that unit, rebuild it from the ground up with a new coach, then we are instant NFC East contenders.

remember when we were all scared whether JJ and Parcells were going to be cheap in free agency again? well, look what they did...went out and spent a shhload of cash

I believe the same idea applies to your fear, and I think Parcells and JJ know that the Oline is a huge, team weakness, that needs to be fixed, and didn't Parcells address the Oline in his 12/29 PC? there's a reason Parcells has been so successful in the past, and I don't think it's been done by letting weaknesses go unaddressed

Is Kalen Thorton playing OLB or DE?

Will Burnett be able to return in time for TC?

I would prefer to go OL over LB in the draft, but at this point wouldn't mind if we chose one over the other.

On second thought, I take that back. Our D is currently ahead of our offense, so I say go offense first. And although our LBing core is somewhat of a mess, most of our meltdowns have been contributed to poor FS play.

....and not enough people are showing concern over our WRs. We are getting ancient at the position. We need to get someone young in place for when Key and Glenn are either let go or decide to hang it up in a couple of years. Young receivers take so long to develop.

And for the love of god, please draft a *** kicker.

We need lots of bodies, so I would try to trade down as much as possible and accumulate as many 2s, 3s and 4s as possible.

Petitti - rookie
They both come back and play much better next year. We have been through this whole argument every day for the last month.

Flozell is coming off major knee surgery as an old man, not a young pup.
The NFL reaper is after Larry Allen's hiney.
Rivera is another old codger with a bad back (maybe the worst kind of injury a lineman can have).
Al Johnson might be a hair better Clay Shiver/Matt Lehr type for the rest of his NFL career. Quick but weak.
Pettiti never showed any improvement over the season. In fact he got worse as the season progressed. Not a good sign for a young guy.

That's 3 old guys who will have to be replaced sometime and 2 young guys who may never be worth much. O- Line was the most pressing need - PERIOD. And if you go into the season "assuming" everything clears itself up automatically you've just written the season off.....
