What Should We Expect From Bruce Carter In 2014?

We are now going into the fourth year of Bruce Carter’s career, and I have no idea what to think of him overall in Dallas. There’s times in his career he has looked fantastic and I’ve thought that him and Sean Lee could potentially become the best linebacker pairing in the NFL. But then I re-watch the games from 2013 and believe DeVonte Holloman should be starting over him. Up until the last few days, I really didn’t have any grasp on what Bruce Carter is and what we should expect from him in 2014. It wasn’t until I got to the Minnesota game last year that I finally figured out what Bruce Carter’s role should be on the team. But before I reveal that, let’s take a quick look at Bruce Carter’s tape.

Everyone knows Bruce Carter is athletic. It is the main reason why the Cowboys took him in the second round of the NFL draft despite his knee injury. They envisioned him flying to ball, sideline to sideline. They covet that speed at the weak-side linebacker spot, hence the reason for targeting Ryan Shazier in this years draft. Here are a few examples of him using his speed to track down ball carriers while running to the sideline:

In the gifs of Carter in the run game, that was just bad technique, not a lack of strength, IMO. Notice how he turns his shoulder in both of the run gifs. That locked him into defending on one side of the block. There are times that it is ok within the scheme to do that, but I think in those 2 situations he should have taken on the blocker without committing to one side.

He was good at stacking-and-shedding blocks in 2012.

I hope he returns to form but i'm not expecting much from any of the defense.

All I can see is Sean Lee avoid the T, make the pulling G reach for him, and then avoid the G and get upfield enough to bounce the play outside for Carter to clean it up in the first gif. Man. It sucks that he's out before the season even starts.

What should we expect? Improvement. Anyone getting paid the kind of money he is getting paid should improve on his craft, or that money will dry up...not just from the Cowboys but with any team in the league.

Carter is another one of the Cowboy players that has great talent , but his play doesn't show it. I had high expectations for him, but I have some serious doubts that he can turn things around at this point. He has been lazy with little motivation the last year or so.

Technique could have been better but in both of those it sure looked to me that Church was the bigger goat.

Carter needs to rush the passer more, IMO.

He attacks when he's backs there.

He's in a contract year, right? I expect his focus improves and he has a good year. I expect he leads or lbs in tackles but doesn't earn a monster deal. He'll hit FA, not like what he is offered and comes back on a one year deal

Carter is his best when he attacks the QB and the ball carrier. Complicated schemes is not his Forte.

More disappointment, until proven otherwise.

Wow, you really thought that out didn't you?

I expect him to be more focused, therefore making him a better player. All eyes, or most are on him and even more so with the injury to Lee.
I think he returns to the form when he showed he could be that player everyone was looking for. Or at least solid in it.

I expect to see a better prepared player in Carter and a guy who hopefully has a better understanding of this defensive system he is playing in. I hope he is able to see and react instead of trying to figure out what is going on. I think Carter has the physical traits but I think he overthinks and can be slow to react because he is still unsure. I think that is one reason Marinelli wants him to remain at weak side and not work him at the MLB spot he wants him forcused on his currently responsiblities

The guy only shows one skill so far, run and chase side line to side line. He excels at that. His pass defense and ability to shed are going have to improve huge for him to return in 2015.

Using logic hurts, doesn't it?
