What teams with nothing to play for are throwing backup QB's into the final game?

"I understand those that might say, 'Play Philip,' and all, but that's not the way the National Football League, in my view, is set up. Our goal is to win the game and get our 10th victory."

-- Marty Shottenheimer

"He is a little better. At this point, the way he was today, I would not expect him to throw tomorrow," said Titans head coach Jeff Fisher. "I am hoping to get him out there by Friday so he can practice."

-- Jeff Fisher on Steve McNair. Obviously, Fisher would like for McNair to play on Sunday, otherwise why bother? Count Jeff Fisher among the head coaches in the league who doesn't know how to "evaluate".

Joey Harrington is going to start on Sunday, not Dan Orlovsky.

Do any of you people in Houston know if the Texans are just going to throw Ragone out of the field on Sunday?

As far as I know, the only teams playing "backups" with nothing to play for are teams like Oakland and Cleveland who benched their starter weeks ago due to ineffectiveness and have no plans for them in 06, or teams who's starter has gone down with injury.

Is this a rhetorical question? :D

This week Bill gave another lecture on the nature of competition. What he needs to do is backtrack a little and give a lecture on the concept of it.

I'll admit to once again being as unable to 'fathom' the 'meaningless' take as Tuna. When you see a team battling back from that horrendous loss at Fed Ex, the effort and the heart and the literal tears in Carolina, you get at least a bit of the sense of what it must mean to play the pro game, and how much pride and love of team these players have. But no one can really know the extent of it but the coaches and players.

Even if we are mathematically eliminated when that game start, I hope the team comes out playing like it's the conference championship. I hope they kick arse and feed off comradery and the hopes for a more sucessful better season next year.

You play to win the game. There ain't nothin else.

I guess all of those guys didn't get the memo. They are supposed to sacrifice the present for the future that may or may not happen.

"You play to win the game." That's what I believe in.

I'm sorry Roshi, but I know you are better than this. Lets take them one at a time.

1. Marty Schottenheimer with Drew Brees. Last time I checked Brees is a young QB.

2. Jeff Fisher - Steve McNair - This one is more to your point, and I personally think he would do well to play his backup in this one.

3. Joey Harrington is a YOUNG QB taken with a 1st round pick.

4. Houston Texans - David Carr YOUNG QB taken with a 1st round pick.

Now, I have a question for you.

How many teams in the NFL have a 41 year old QB starting this weekend who have had no playoff chance for about 3 weeks now?

Oh, sorry, that happened last year in Dallas.

can't it also be that all these QBs are the most effective/healthiest? and went into the year as the starter?

Can you answer my 2nd question please? Have you EVER seen another NFL team do what Parcells did last year? I've watched football a long time, as I'm sure you have, and I've never seen anything like that in my life.

I only see 1 question. Am I missing something? What was your second question?

Seattle is supposedly starting Hasselbeck but will then bring in Seneca Wallace almost immediately.

The Seahawks have the show locked up so they have nothing to play for.

I disagree, he's had his chance and a lot of people think Joey is done with.

Actually bringing up Vinny works against you because Dallas wasn't going to start this season with Romo or Henson whether they had played 5 games or not. Did Dallas need to play Garrett when we didn't make the playoffs?

Carr and Harrington may be young but they are also guys who have nothing to gain. In Carr's case the guy has taken an immense beating. In Harrington's his every game is league auditions because his play isn't worth his contract.

Losing for the same of losing by trying to develop a guy who isn't even close does nothing for you. The only way you can do that is how Jimmy did it here and that means clearing out all the current vets.

Buffalo is a great example where vets got upset as the season wore on and they didn't have Bledsoe in place. They have a good defense and a 1st round back but no chance to do anything because QB has been a trouble spot.

It does mean something if you plan on bringing those backup's in next year, like we did. I have liked what Bill has done in Dallas. But there are somethings that he has done that was downright dumb of him.

There was no need to start Vinny last year, when we was already eliminated from the picture. Bill just wanted to get as many wins possible to make the record look better.

Vinny gave them the best chance to win. Anyone remember that line? I sure do. Well at that point winning isn't going to get you anywhere, and quess what your starting QB isn't winning anyways. So whats the big deal? Stubborn, plain and simple......

And, unlike Bledsoe, will be lucky if their current team doesn't decide to go another direction at QB for 2006. Particularly Harrington. So those teams in particular should be "evaluating" other QB's.

and a lot of people think those that think he's "done with" are crazy. while he may never be the all-star he was drafted to be, he's a LOT better than romo or hensen at this point - i'd LOVE to have him as a backup and/or compete for the starting job.

too bad he never played for parcells in another life, then he'd be a shoe-in.

Landry did it all the time.

- THIRD STRING Glenn Carano started a game vs the Colts in midseason when Dallas was a contender and the Colts were one of the league's worst teams.

- In 1985 Landry started Gary Hogeboom against the 49ers when Dallas had already locked up the East and could not advance their playoff position with a win.

- In 1986, Landry started Reggie Collier against the Bears in the season finale with the playoffs out of reach instead of Steve Pelleur to see what he could do.

Even Switzer did it to a degree in 1996, barely playing his starters against Washington in the last game at RFK. With no chance to advance the playoff seeding and the East already in hand, Switzer called the game a "bye" a week ahead of time.

Q. When is it silly to not start a backup QB or atleast give him ample playing time?

A. Knowing full well that your starter is not gonna be back the following year

B. Knowing that they need game experence

C. Knowing that your starter has performed poorly all/most of the season

D. The team has a significant financial interest tied up in the backup

E. Uncertainty of the backups ability (i.e. can he play in this league)

F. None of the above

G. All of the above

H. a combination of those above

I asked for some teams that are just throwing in their backups for this last game, and so far no one has mentioned them.

Hmm...

Obviously, 32 NFL coaches and franchises are seemingly lacking in the common sense of franchise building so prevalent among a certain segment of Cowboy fans. Why haven't the owners tapped into our wealth of intellectual resources as of yet?

several times i've offered standard answers and usually got back IT'S SITUATIONAL!!!

now, to serve your own purpose (much like you're now yelling at people who serve their own through their posts) you make situational issues "standard" across 32 teams because it helps YOUR argument.

31 teams DO NOT WIN the superbowl every year, but we should now go out and do what they do year in and year out?

i long for a quincy / hutch debate now. the only thing FOR SURE is we're divided greatly on this issue, so there must be one.

we see it, those on drews side "do not".
