What the Cap Says about Our FA Approach

So we signed Ayodele and Kosier to long-term contracts and back-loaded both of the contracts. Not hugely, but we certainly could have put a bunch more into this year's cap. Then we cut Keyshawn to save a measely $1 million roster bonus (measely is relative).

So the result is we seem to be conserving a ton of cap spave. The interesting thing is that we have a number of players like Roy Williams, Jason Witten, and Newman who we will need to start signing to long-term contracts soon. Williams is still under his rookie contract which was originally 7 years but will void to 5. That means we need to re-sign him in 2007. Witten's contract was for four years and also ends after 2006. Not sure about Newman. He had a 7 year contract as well. I imagine that means it's really 5 years and we will re-sign in 2008 - not positive.

I can't believe we are making all this room to sign these guys in 2007 - otherwise we would be front-loading contracts, not back-loading them.

So then they must be wanting to spend the money this off-season. I have heard some speculation that we want to trade way up in the first round, but to get who? Not a QB, certainly - doesn't help us win now. We won't be able to trade up high enough to get Reggie Bush. You certainly wouldn't make all those sacrifices to get an OT (Brick) or a LB (Hawk), and we don't need a DE that bad (Williams). So really, I just don't buy that theory.

That leaves free agency. Now there are two phases of free agency. It could be that we are targeting some guys in the second phase, but teams have gotten so much better at managing the cap that there probably won't be much there. So it's going to be the first phase. But we are letting a lot of the marque guys move to other teams. That makes me think we are looking for quantity - not quality. I wouldn't be surprised if we pick up a scrub FB (Sowell), S (Coleman), K (Mare) and OT (Fabini). None of these guys will cost a lot, but will fill holes.

I think we'll sign Owens or re-sign Keyshawn. It seems like we may use Key to pressure Owens. There aren't so many suitors and Key gives us leverage over Owens' camp. I don't think Walker is going to happen because we don't want to lose that pick. Moulds aint a FA, so that's not even a possibility at this point. Getting a rookie WR is not going to fill the void from KJ - it will take longer than one TC for the player to develop NFL skills.

So there you have it. My best guess is that we are waiting so that we can make a number of small signings which will provide marginal upgrades. Either TO or KJ will be signed, but it might take a bit.

By the way, I am not endorsing this approach, merely trying to piece together the strategy...

How can they use KEYSHAWN in the MeO contract talks...they cut him to save a million...now if u said he we gave Key a million to keep his mouth shut (about more money) a few weeks until we firgure out the rest of the WR group...

Key said he would give us the option of matching and resigning him once he gets an offer. Now how patient he will be with this, I'm not sure.

Franchise Roy Williams and trade him for a number 1 pick and hope that someone will trade for him.

Trade RW? *** are you on?

Alot of people will think differently on this one. Roy Williams does not cover well, but he is the NFLs hardest hitter. We need to resign Witten, Newman, James, and Williams. Someone is going to have to go and out of all of them, I would let Roy go. We might be able to trade him when his contract is up by franchising him. We could then trade him and replace him with a cover FS and move Davis or Beriault to SS.

Actually don't see a problem in resigning all of these guys. We've got a lot of room under this cap and there will be more money next year. We simply backload like Snyder does. It's not these 4 or so I'm concerned about. It's down the line when Ware, Canty, Spears, Barber, etc. come due.

Roy is the best SS in the game he isn't going anywhere

Witten,Newman,James, and Williams will all be here, see the Cowboys (unlike a certain team some seem to envy on this site) keeps their homegrown talent, and do so by not signing every name out there to insane contracts. The Cowboys will have plenty of cap to resign their players when they come due

Good post, acruther. I've wondered myself if at least part of this inactivity could be due to upcoming Witten and Roy deals... Witten, especially.

Of course, it's not like re-signing those guys to even big deals would use all of our cap space...
