With approximately 54% of the season completed for the Cowboys, they sit near the bottom of the NFC and have extremely long odds to make the playoffs. The Cowboys have been burdened with another poorly constructed defensive roster, a rookie HC trying to find some traction and the heart-breaking experience of losing a teammate in tragic circumstances. It’s been a rough half of the 2025 season.

So what should the rest of the 2025 season be about and what can we realistically expect from this team moving forward? If I were in charge I would focus on the following:
  • Determine what you want this team to be, then find out who can help get us there and maybe more importantly, who cannot.
  • Start with aggressively figuring out who and what to build this team around for the future. Play young guys who maybe aren’t ready to start yet but need playing time to develop.
  • NOW is the time to develop young players. Find out who can play and who can’t. Be like Jimmy was back in 1989-90. Churn the roster hard.
  • With the new trade addition of Q Williams, find out what combo of defensive players best compliment his skills.
  • By the end of this season, our coaches and FO should be in agreement on who needs to go and who stays. Even if that means trading or cutting some guys who are highly paid.
This 2025 Cowboys roster is not a playoff team. So spend the rest of this season finding out who is worth keeping and who isn’t. Stop keeping so many of the same guys who aren’t getting us anywhere.

The first step in becoming a great team is recognizing that you are currently not close to being great. Our FO needs to stop pretending this is a really good roster who has been “unlucky”. It’s not unlucky. It’s not talented enough.

I'm not sure of the purpose for threads like these. At the end of the day, it is asking for the GM to finally learn lessons and become better at his job. We all know this is not happening because he is a narcissist who has job security until the grave.

Until such time, there will be no change

The purpose of a thread like this is the same as any thread on this forum. It’s a chance for a fan to give their opinion. I’ve never thought for one second that my opinion is anything more than an expression of a fan.

I agree with you that there will probably not be a change. But I didn’t write this because I expected the Jones family to be swayed by a fan on an opinion forum, lol.

You are correct. We won't sniff even a wc game.
Also, play the rookies a lot to find at least one diamond in the rough and to prevent long-term injuries to veterans.

I would like to see improvement in the o-line both individual performance wise and as a unit. It appeared incremental progress had been made but now seems to have regressed.
I want both starters and depth to be the one thing to point to as the strength of the team going into next season.

On defense I want something to hang my hat on at all 3 levels of the defense whether scheme or player specific that we can say is a good starting point for next year's defensive philosophy.

Just to have good fundamental football feelings about the team's near future on both sides of the ball.

That's my rest of the year desires.

Then why does the board even exist?

We all get it. Jerry and Stephen are the problem.

At least posts like this are thoughtful and have some broad intent rather than just being a rant

And Bob, have a like but I’m still annoyed!

The o-line regression, unfortunately, coincides with Tyler Smith getting his bag.

I don’t think he’s slacking, perhaps his nagging injuries are taking a toll, but he has not performed like the leader of the line like we need him to.

Honestly, I think that our DL looks pretty good on paper. They just need to play together for a while. It's the back seven that could really use some shuffling.

I know that we have a Pro Player Personnel Director, so let's target some linebackers and defensive backs that are on other teams' Practice Squads. I'd also REALLY like to see Guyton get reps at RT.

Should be, totally. But we've seen before that they will usually play the players who they think will give the team the best chance to win now. It's short-sighted but Jerry would so much rather see one more win on the record than evaluate talent behind the starters.

Great post Bob, as usual.

With the Eagles winning at Lambeau tonight, our playoff chances have dropped from 7% to 4% according to the analytics.

So yeah, time to start looking at the roster with an eye to next season, any realistic shot at playoffs required Philly to lose tonight.

"We'll get them next year."

Let's evaluate for now. And take what we've learned to the next season with the same front office and a flawed roster with more holes in it than swiss cheese.

Like getting a fresh cup of water every twelve months and adding a teaspoon of oil. Yet hoping for a a miraculous way they finally mix and come together.

And once the new glass of water becomes tainted. Wait twelve months and go get a new glass of water again. Along with the same 83 year old teaspoon of oil and try mixing them again hoping for a different result.

Solid metaphor.

A whole lot of luck is going to be needed for this franchise to win anything big under the Jones regime.

Great intelligent post as always bullet.

This is a common sense approach to building a good team

Determine what you want the team to be.

Unfortunately with Jerry in charge all that is is profitable.

You know this, the majority on this forum know this.

However, i don't think Jerry knows this. I think he still beleives the Cowboys are contenders with a poor start to the season.

Why would he make these trades if he thought the Cowboys didn't have a good chance of still making the playoffs?

Jerry could very well be that delusional.

Even losses to teams like the Cardinals, Panthers and Bears have not forced Jerry to accept reality.

Hopefully the pending loss to the pathetic Raiders will sober him up.

Either he's that delusional, or he knows exactly what they are and it doesn't matter a bit to him because he's still making money and filling seats.

Agree with all of this.

Can I add in the "T" word as an objective!

I don't mean from minute 1 of each game, play hard, try things out but make sure we take our foot off the gas last 10 minutes of games so we can test the roster and plan for 2026 but we desperately need a top 10 pick, not pick 17.
