I'm the kind of fan who will watch a game once, then watch certain players the next time I can stomach watching it again.
I have to say, the offensive line is going to get a pass here, mainly because only Free was back at his position from last year. And that position wasn't his position from the previous year.
Free - Suddenly is having trouble with guys like Pier Paul at LT. I see him going back to RT next year where he's had better success.
Kosier- Maybe done. Too bad. He's getting hurt every year now. Ten years in the league takes it toll. Foot, ankle and now knee. Another offensive lineman they need to replace now, only takes away from putting all their energy into removing the last fingerprints of Bill Parcells.
Tyronasuarus - Will move to LT. Too bad for you Pier Paul.
The rookies are coming along at C and Guard but they need a quality veteran thrown in to push guys like Dockery and Holland.
I think the skill positons are set. They found their third WR, added a talented RB and a decent FB. Although I worry about Bryant. Way too many plays he runs about 15 yards and kicks it into cruise.
ON TO THE REAL PROBLEM
This defense is soft. through and through.
I'll start with secondary.
It doesn't look like the secondary wants to tackle. All they do is grab on to a jersey and hold on. I thought they had upgraded the safety position. But the safeties are always out of position. I can't even tell when Elam is on the field. He just disappears at times.
Jenkins- has talent, but he's hurt all the time. If he does make a solid tackle, he gets hurt doing it.
Newman- Is stealing his paycheck this year, the wall has arrived, period.
Scandrick- Has a thankless job chasing the slot. But is adequite.
Ball- JAG. He doesn't bring enough after a couple years to want to keep him.
Linebackers
Ware, Lee and Spencer are keepers. Spencer gets grief for lack of sacks, but rushing the passer is not his top priority. He's still a talented LB. They need to add a pass rusher to compliment Ware. Teams are realizing they can chip Ware all day.
Brady is done. He gets really exposed in coverage. He and Brooking need to be upgraded in the off-season. They were a huge piece of the puzzle of liability to this defense.
Hopefully the light will go on for rookie Carter. Man do they need that #2 ILB.
Defensive Line
From what I have observed, this was the biggest problem for the Cowboys all year. They let Bowen walk to replace him with Coleman. Not an upgrade in my opinion. I never saw Bowen get pushed around at times like Coleman.
I've been waiting for them to move Ratliff off the nose. He just gets consistently doubled and neutralized at the nose. A waste of an impact player. They seem to have 4 or 5 NT fat bodies that can't do anyting other than try and hold their ground. I never see Romo get the pocket time other QB's get against the Dallas defense. 7, 8 -10 seconds in the pocket.
Unfortunitely, not an overnight fix. Hatcher and Ratliff are about the only two lineman you'd miss. Blow it up. Pick up a OG in free agency and spend the entire rest of the draft on replacing the failure at defense.
Since the Dline needs an extensive overhaul, it might be an opportunity to move back to the 4-3.
Hatcher and Ratliff at DT
Ware at DE
Get another DE/OLB in the draft/ free agency.
I just can't see putting more time and money into the 3-4. It failed under Parcells, Phillips and Garrett. Just remember, Campo had a better defense with a 4-3 when he was 6-10 than any year either of those previous coaches had.
Draft: RD1 any front 7 position on defense, maybe a CB.
RD2 see RD1
RD3 see RD2
etc.
