It's Friday the weather is great so time for a little fun. It's obvious Type A, B, C are out the window this free agency period. Reading about the potential interest in aquiring draft picks due to a high grade of talent coming out this year has the team set it's sights on the type "Z" free agent this year? Ok maybe not Z but the free agent where this team seems to excel but never gets credit for. This free agent comes from not being drafted. I don't need to bore anyone with the list of talent this team has assembled throughout the years. Just curious because if this team really wanted to make room to sign someone they seriously were interested in they would have.

100% agree with this. Some people make it sound like the front office is wringing their hands over these FAs they can't "afford" but really want.

I know they liked Bennett who signed with Seattle(5m 1 year), they saw him up close earlier in the year. They still believe hope is a plan.

Since I'm not privy to their plan I don't know whether it's lined with hope or actual steps nor do I pretend to know what they believe. Thanks for the insight.

Where'd you hear we had any interest in Bennett? That's news to me.

I'm not sure why people care about Dallas signing Free Agents at this point. It isn't like they have gone after a bunch of Free Agent superstars the last few seasons:

Brandon Carr - The one and only high profile signing. Good player, still not so sure about the price paid.

Nate Livings and Mac Bernadeau - Who on this board was excited when they were signed? I wasn't. I was bummed because it sent a message that they were probably going to ignore the o-line in the 2012 draft.

Kyle Orton - I like him well enough, but he is insurance and nothing more.

Dan Conner - What a total waste of roster space

Lawrence Vickers - He under performed badly

Brodney Poole - Didn't even make the roster in 2012

Keynon Coleman - He has been okay, but still, nothing to write home about

Abram Elam - Gone

Aside from Carr, who on this list would anyone lose sleep over if Dallas inserted a rookie or second year player in their place? Furthermore, is it truly going to make or break the Cowboys' season if they sign a few more of these jewels?

If there is any help to come, it will be in the draft. Dallas has been targeting "JAGs" in Free Agency the last two off-seasons to get by in spots if they needed to. That's pretty much it.

I doubt we wanted to dip in that gene pool again

This is telling and one of the reasons Dallas come up short. You have to hit not only in the draft but in Free Agency as well.

I see one good signing on that list - Orton. And he's not even supposed to play. Sure, Carr is good and a nice guy, but you don't overspend on a #2 CB. Especially not in a year where you give up a first and a second for another CB.

You have to optimize and spend your resources (including roster spots) wisely.

very good post

cant build a team by spending an inordinate amount of resources on the periphery and ignoring the trenches

While I agree you have to hit on both aspects in order to compete consistently I will differ on the idea that we overspent for a #2 CB. At the time Carr was to be our #1 CB. We had no idea we would trade up and get Mo. Looking back maybe we overspent but at the time it was pretty close to mkt rate for a #1 corner.
