What type of safety should we target?

A Free Safety that patrols the back end or a modern day, chess piece type that can be used in many roles inside the box?

We are all aware about Caleb Downs, he is more of that chess piece type, but not that roof type of free safety. He is more like a Brain Branch, then he is a Ed Reed. Cnuball thinks he is more like a Troy P around the line of scrimmage, which speaks to Downs type of game.

Donovan Wilson is a fa after this season, Hooker has 1 yr left on his deal, but read the team could save 7 million if they make him a June 1st release.

@Gambit pointed out Jalen Kilgore is picking up stream. Looking into him he is very intriguing as a 1st round prospect. Moreso than Ramsey or Thieneman imo

Biggest decision will be if they keep Hooker or sign/draft his replacement. Pretty confident Donovan Wilson won't be returning. Don't see anyone on the roster who could challenge for the starting job (s). Thought Thomas might have a chance, but not after what I saw this year.

I have been intrigued about adding that chest piece type of safety for a few years now. Really liked Dax Hill, Branch, last year it was Barron. They all have that versatility to play multiple roles that can keep an offense guessing. Feel the top 3 safety prospects this yr all have a similar skill set.

Downs is my wet dream in the coming draft because he is the playmaker we have not had since Woody
He looks like a special player, but that position typically does get devalued in the draft. I also watched the USC and Oregon Safeties, they also have that same versatility although big gap between them and Downs.

I think those two would be probably good enough; of course a wet blanket could cover better than what we have now

Not trying to be funny, but a good one they can depend on to be solid from day one. I just want at least one dependable S. Hooker is good enough to be the other S in a interchangeable set up.

i think we could use either, and shouldn't fall in love. also i think that now that they've fixed the interior it will inform the direction as they evaluate the rest of the season.

I believe unless Hooker is awful down the stretch he returns next season, but Wilson will most likely be playing elsewhere, that leaves open a starting spot that he easily be filled via the draft if they decide to use 1 of those top picks at the position.

Agree, it is time for real talent at the position. They did look into acquiring Fitzpatrick. Last time they took a high safety was JJ Wilcox in the 3rd rd. Perhaps, things are starting to change as they finally invested in the DT position in a big way. Fixing up the middle is extremely important.

How would you guys feel if they traded 1 of the 1st for an elite safety in the league instead of drafting one? No development period and immediate impact player for the 26 roster?

With our cap situation we need to keep bringing in quality rookie contract players.

We just can’t afford many $12m type dudes until 2027.
