What was the alternative? (in your opinion)

Okay the dust has started to settle, numerous people have voiced their frustration with Jerry and the boys so I thought it would be interesting to get some opinions/ideas from some of the experts here.

So Romo just got paid and most here have been worked up. My question is, if you were in charge and you could go back to the day our season ended with that loss against Washington, what exactly would you do to prepare for next season?

I went back to that day because i don't want to hear anything about any previous drafts, or taking back trades. i just want to know specifically what you would do in this offseason that would put the Cowboys in the best position as possible.

Get as crazy with it as you like, if you truly believe it would make us better.
For the record, i'm cool with the Romo signing and I don't spend a lot of time focusing on salary cap numbers so this isn't some sort of trick question. i just want to know what some of you guys would do.

Nothing wrong with letting him play out his contract and deciding what to do next year. If he leaves, he leaves.

No biggies. How many playoff games have we won WITH Tony Romo? Why are we so afraid to move on?

Draft well, and we can find his replacement in this year's draft.

It's not like we're going to make a Super Bowl run this year or next or the year after ... with Tony and Jerry at the helm.

It's no biggie to you if a top 10 QB leave for zero compensation? That would be all time NFL stupid...

I would blow the team up.

I would then hire the best GM I could get my hands on.

I would then find the best coach I could.

I would let them know their jobs are secure so they could make candid, long term decisions. I would consider trading Romo and let Orton run the team while rebuilding.

I would have given him a new contract if we're keeping the team in tact. Otherwise I would have traded the core and started over.

I would have made him play out the contract year. If he takes the team deep into the playoffs, you sign him to a long term deal. Would it cost more then? Yeah, maybe, but he would be a more proven commodity and worth the money. If he wilted again under the pressure of a contract year or in another win and your in game, you simply let him walk and move on unless his market value has come way way down. Then what do you do? The same thing every team does when they are looking for a new QB. You go get a veteran, draft one, and start the next era. This plan would seem to have been ideal given that next year's draft looks very deep at QB. If Romo's performance was such that you let him walk, then the team would probably be in a good position to get a QB in the draft.

I agree with everything you said but as you can see Jerry will never follow that path. As PT Barnam once said, "There is a sucker born every minute". Jerry is the consummate barker at a carnival. He is all about selling the sizzle to get butts in the seats. Every year you see him try to get a few stars surrounding a bunch of losers so that he can fill his shiny new stadium and the "suckers" readily line up for more 8&8 drivel. Parcels always quoted to not be "sucked" when looking at a mediocre football team. That means not buying Jerry's hype machine. Sadly many of the "Home Team" posters on this board have been buying hype for 17 years. Many of them are all about being "sucked" by Romo just like they were when they were being sucked by QC several years ago.

Nothing will change really until fans stop buying the hype, the jerseys, the season tickets, the overpriced hotdogs & hamburgers, the overpriced parking slots and all the other hype that Jerry (Al Davis Reincarnated) peddles each year. Don't be a sucker...Quit being sucked and maybe Jerry will squirm. Doubt it though.

That Romo is a top 10 QB at this point in time. The problem has always been that he has been paired with a bottom 10 team to play with. The stars on the team over the hill and the end result is when you pair a top 10 QB with a bottom 10 team you get 8 & 8 every year. The definition of "insanity" is to keep doing the same dumb things year in and year out and expecting to get a different result. Jerry and Stephen live in a fantasy football world me thinks...

If I was Jerry? Hire a GM. That's enough.

I know. It's such a loss to let a soon-to-be 34 year old QB walk without compensation.

I would not have signed Romo, I would have tried to trade him, and if not let him play it out. He puts of great stats but when it matters most, he fails. Be it the team or him, he doesn't come through when it counts the most. Sorry, he doesn't have the "it" in him.

Every year we hear about how this QB will be great and this one will not and it turns out different every year.

How many folks actually thought Russell Wilson would have come in day one and led the Seahawks to the 2nd round of the playoffs?

Kapernick is a 2nd year players, Andy Dalton is a 2nd year player and has been to to playoff games.

Cut the same dead weight they have so far (Sensy, Spears, Connor). I would continue with Free.

Use the draft to build the trenches. Next year, look for that franchise QB unless they like someone like Nassib or Dysert in this years draft.

The one problem that can't be fix and it's the biggest is the idiots in the FO.

There was no other choice. You have a franchise QB at the helm and he's in his early 30s. You pay the going rate and try to fix the roster and give him a team he can win with. You don't blow the team up, trade him, let him walk next year or pay him even more, or any other combination you can think of.

It's not as big of a deal considering he would be 34 years old and doesn't have anything on his resume to validate a huge contract like that.

We gave that guy money like he just won the Superbowl.

Not a good deal imo. He's a heck of a player but he's done nothing to validate this contract.

I would let Spencer walk if I could not trade him and also would have tried to trade Miles Austin. I definitely would not have restructured Miles. I would have retained Ratliff only if he took a pay cut. I would have done the deal they did with Romo because he is an excellent QB. I would have tried to sign free agent Michael Bennett.

I would give significant leeway and play calling duties to Romo because I believe he is the best person to influence the play calls as long as the offensive line sucks. I believe Garrett calls plays as if the line is functional. It's not.

For the rest of the offseason including the draft, I would decide if we were going to be a passing team or balanced team and commit to it. Right now we are passing team with a guilty conscience over not running it more and better. I don't care which we are as long as we commit to it.
