It's frustrating, because it feels like they've curbed a lot of their historical bad habits. Now they just need to hit on the haymakers they've already thrown (talking to you, Jalon Smith), or they just need to settle down and be smarter about adding talented guys where they have picks to do so. Just a couple more good young players on defense, and this team could be formidable.
BENSON MAYOWA – RUSH END
News of Gregory’s likely lengthened absence was a blow to the rush end position.
The saving grace is Benson Mayowa, one of my biggest surprise choices for camp. It’s my belief he would’ve continued starting even if Gregory returned in October.
Mayowa has a nice blend of power and speed to excel as an every down end. Gregory had yet to prove adequate size/strength to hold the edge on early downs.

CEDRIC THORNTON – DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Cedric Thornton is billed as a disruptive run stuffer with a little added pass rush.
What some are missing is the 3-4 defense he came from didn’t fully unleash his burst/power prowess like Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 will.
While playing head up over the center or tackle, Thornton was tasked with defeating his man and the occasional double team.
Similar to what Marinelli did with Jason Hatcher, he’ll now turn Thornton loose to terrorize the interior gap with explosiveness.
Thornton will quickly prove to be a sizable disruptive upgrade over Nick Hayden in camp. Look for the veteran to contribute 3-5 sacks next year.
To me, they already have a functional plan already in place...
