I was having a conversation with a friend today about how rarely trades happen in today's NFL. He posed an interesting question.

As a purely hypothetical question, what would it take for the Cowboy's to trade_______?
Obviously, none of these guys is going to be traded. It is fun to think about what it might take to tempt the Joneses.

Dak: The Eagles traded two firsts (one known and high), a second, a third and a fourth to get Wentz. The Commanders gave up 3 firsts and a second for RGIII. The team trading for Dak would get a far less risky quantity, with one year gone on the rookie contract. It would take more. Maybe three firsts, three seconds and a couple thirds? More?

Zeke: He's proven to be a special, special player. Still, less than the Herschel Walker trade. Two firsts and two seconds from a team picking in the top ten? Two firsts and one second from the team with the #1 overall?

Smith: Tough one. He has an absurdly team-friendly long term contract. It would be very hard to give that up. See Zeke above for a ballpark.

The others are probably in the two firsts ballpark, perhaps a bit more.

I was thinking about this a few weeks ago when we lost to the Gnats. Just the notion of trading Dak for both of Cleveland's 1st round picks (#1, #12) this year and just keeping Romo as the starter next year. Then, you draft another QB to groom with our pick later in the 1st round or even the 2nd round for say Pat Mahomes etc. Naturally, the Browns would have to want to make that trade and see Dak as their savior or whatever. A bold move and one that could backfire if Romo gets hurt again next year. However, having 3 first round picks is like winning the lottery so to speak. I can imagine it will be a complete **** storm on Jerry's head for making that trade by the media, but wow...imagine drafting Myles Garrett or Jonathan Allen and then Rueben Foster or Jabril Peppers at #12. :omg:

I feel a little dirty now.

You don't trade franchise quarterbacks. Especially ones you are only paying minimal money too for 4 years. This is our window. Now is the time to spend some money in the off-season. Not crazy money. But address some key positions on defense and then draft defense a WR and keep doing what we have been doing.

Why would I take a hypothetical question disrespectfully? If San Fran offered this years 1st and 2nd round picks along with next years 1st rounder, would you consider trading Smith or Zeek?

In a word, 'no'. So you get three early picks for the already-known-to-be-valuable player... what are the odds that the combined value of the three picks through two drafts exceeds the value of the superstar you've traded?

It's a fool's errand. How many NFL first-round busts have we seen year-after-year?

Dak

Dak- wouldn't trade but had to be 2 1st, 2 2nds and the other teams best offensive and defensive player
Zeke- wouldn't trade but had to be 2 1st, 2 2nds and the other teams best offensive and defensive player
Smith and Martin- wouldn't trade but had to be 2 1st, 2 2nds and the other teams best offensive and defensive player
Dez- 1st, 2nd and 3rd
Frederick- 1st, 2nd and 3rd

then we need a RB, we definitely not taking one with #2 this year and the 49ers make the playoffs and that next 1st from them would be like #25. Then we are stuck looking for a RB. Nope on Smith, Franchise LTs are harder to find then QBs

You should've punched your friend in the mouth. Unless you had a taser.
A taster would've been perfect for that situation.

What on earth is the point of trading away franchise, cornerstone pieces to your team who are in their young 20s? Makes zero sense and no team is doing that. Pointless to even discuss.

I don't think they're worth trading unless you have guys ready to step in and play. I mean after they lost Murray they had Randle and that was an epic fail. So would it really be a ROI if you have to spend 1 or maybe both picks to move up and select a guy to fill the hole you just traded away?

These aren't solid starters we are talking about these are cornerstone pieces to a potential dynasty, and I don't think any amount of picks is worth trading when you still have all your picks in the upcoming draft anyways. I'd just keep adding talent.

So that's my answer lol

If Cleveland offered two number ones for Dez it's a no-brainer
Everybody else on the list is a non-starter

Dak has the potential to be the third amazing quarterback in franchise history you just don't trade that and Zeek will just be better next year

for the love of god and over active imaginations.

we luck into the find of the century and people want to trade.

these are the same people who would win a million in a slot machine and turn around and see how much more than could get.

this would be about as assnugget stupid as you can get.

I'm trading Dez.

For what...Who's going to take on his contract? What would you trade him for...?
Who's going to give you a number 1 pick for him? What team 1 WR away from
playoffs is going to give you a number 1 pick? None is what I see.

Dak: probably 3 firsts
Zeke: a 1st and a 2nd rounder
Dez: at his age and lesser production in recent years, probably a 2nd round pick

As for the lineman, it's hard to say as pretty much anything we'd get for them we'd have to re-spend to replace them.
